Join the curious. Ancestry is seeking a curious, passionate, and highly motivated Senior Analyst to join our Data Governance, Quality & Reporting Analytics team. This role is key to advancing our data strategy, focusing on automating governance processes, leveraging AI/ML readiness, and ensuring data quality is maintained at scale. We treat data as a strategic asset, and the Senior Analyst will act as a design leader, translating organizational policy and strategic needs into automated, scalable data requirements and governance frameworks. The role involves leading the adoption of new tools and methodologies, championing data architecture best practices, and ensuring continuous compliance, quality, and accuracy across Ancestry’s data landscape. As a Senior Data Governance Quality & Reporting Analyst, you will perform/lead the following functions:

Requirements

  • Advanced SQL skills for complex data extraction, transformation, and query optimization, including performance tuning.
  • Working experience with Python, R, or similar languages for data manipulation and automation.
  • Advanced Tableau (or similar BI tool) skills for designing governed data sources and complex, executive-level dashboards.
  • Experience with Git for collaborative development and version control.
  • Familiarity with data governance practices in an AI/ML or big data environment.
  • A proactive leader who is curious and possesses a strong analytical mind.
  • Passionate about driving data quality, automation, and the future of data governance.
  • Able to write, communicate, and present complex, technical information to both technical and executive audiences.
  • A governance and analytics expert who is NOT a data scientist or developer.
  • A degree in Management Information Systems, Business Intelligence, Information Science, or any related analytical field, with 3+ years of progressive experience in data governance, data quality, or data analytics, including experience with automation and advanced analytics tools.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Alation or similar data catalog/governance tools and metadata management.
  • Working knowledge of AWS Infrastructure (e.g., Glue, S3, Athena, Step Functions) for data pipeline and governance orchestration.
  • Understanding of REST API basics and their use in integrating data tools and services.
  • Familiarity with semantic layers, knowledge graphs, and data lineage tools to support context engineering.
  • Working knowledge of Terraform or similar tools for infrastructure as code.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement scalable, automated processes and frameworks to enable robust governance of all aspects of data.
  • Partner with Legal and Engineering to translate global policy regulations (e.g. GDPR) into automated data standards and monitor their compliance and implementation (e.g., data deletion and data retention).
  • Lead cross-functional collaboration meetings with analytics groups to drive consensus on critical business definitions, metric calculations, and data standards for AI/ML and reporting.
  • Lead "context engineering" initiatives to build a foundation for AI reliability and automated governance. This includes designing semantic metadata, knowledge graphs, and data catalogs to define and manage data meaning, lineage, quality, ownership, and constraints.
  • Become a subject matter expert on our data, leading the analytics community through complex data knowledge and communicating and presenting large data changes.
  • Design and maintain advanced data quality audits and end-to-end testing frameworks to proactively identify and resolve complex data quality issues.
  • Provide advanced technical support for our data catalog tool (Alation), including new connector integration, database onboarding, metadata automation, and resolving complex governance issues.
  • Serve as a primary technical resource for our data quality (AWS Glue) and data visualization (Tableau) tools, focusing on building high-governance data sets, automated quality checks, and training creators on advanced governance practices.
