About The Position

The Engineering and Innovation (E&I) team at SB Energy provides technical insights and assists decision-making across all life cycle phases of renewable projects, from development, construction, and to operations and maintenance. The Innovation program ideates, evaluates, demonstrates, and deploys at-scale first-of-a-kind technologies. To that end, SB Energy operates an Innovation Center near Denver, Colorado for first-hand field demonstrations of hardware, software, and business models, such as emerging solar technologies, different types of storage, flexible compute loads, AI-based control strategies, and more. The E&I team is seeking an engineer to provide SCADA and control subject matter expertise during the design, contracting, construction, commissioning and operations of solar, energy storage, and data center projects (e.g. design package reviews, equipment selection, supporting ISO’s energization testing, etc.) The Control Engineer will also contribute to the development, demonstration, and deployment of an intelligent energy management system (IEMS), primarily focused on supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA). This position offers exposure to multiple business units within the company, executives, and is an opportunity to broaden and deepen understanding of all aspects of renewable energy and influence strategic direction and business decisions.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in SCADA and control systems, preferably in the renewable energy sector (solar and battery storage) and data center
  • B.S. Engineering from ABET-accredited University or other technical degree. Masters or Doctorate degree a plus and counts towards professional experience
  • Datacenter knowledge in Electric Power Management System (EPMS) and Building Management Systems (BMS) is a plus
  • Proficient in Ignition, Canary Labs, SEL Hardware & Software, GE RX3i, CodeSYS, Data Loggers, Meteorological Equipment, etc.
  • Knowledge of networking and cybersecurity practices related to industrial control systems
  • Broad experience across new solar technologies, energy storage, or application of artificial intelligence / machine learning to renewable energy
  • Demonstrated strong engineering, design, and communication skills, and an ability to work in a dynamic team environment to think outside the box and solve traditional problems in new ways
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills
  • Self-starter with ability to prioritize efforts and drive towards completion
  • Strong verbal, written, interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to contextualize and understand modeling results and effectively able to present results

Responsibilities

  • Be the control and SCADA technical lead during the contracting phase and ensuring expectations with the contractors are clear and defined
  • Manage the requirements with external parties i.e. Independent System Operator (ISO), Qualified Servicing Entity (QSE), NERC, utilities, operations and maintenance, etc. and build into the design
  • Lead the various contractors implementing SCADA and control on Data Center, PV, HV and BESS to ensure the project meets or exceeds milestones and integration into the internal/external systems is successful
  • Lead, oversee and support controls testing and commissioning activities i.e. point to point, control (AVR, PFR, curtailment, etc.), NERC, performance tests and others as necessary
  • Provide technical knowledge on telecommunications design to ensure reliable, cost-effective and requirements are met for the project’s needs
  • Lead SCADA-related projects, including system/feature upgrades and expansions, coordinating with internal teams and external contractors to ensure timely and on-budget completion
  • Optimize project designs by drawing upon SCADA and control design, including best practices, specifications, cost, efficiency, code compliance, performance, and reliability
  • Assist control and data acquisition integration of hardware, such as inverters, storage, and compute loads, at the Innovation Center and commercial plants
  • Assist in the development, implementation and validation of artificial intelligence (AI) based algorithms to control hardware at the Innovation Center and commercial plants
  • Analyze performance of control algorithms, report on the results, and recommend improvements
  • Identify technologies for evaluation and ideate new opportunities based on business need
  • Evaluate the potential for technologies to increase company value, such as through performing techno-economic analyses, developing and/or running models and simulations, gathering information through first-hand interviews, field visits, and literature reviews
  • Perform other job duties as assigned
