How You Will Make An Impact · Perform steel inspections in the shop and field for both Quality Assurance and Quality Control. · Execute inspection in accordance with the contract requirements as shown on approved construction drawings, special provisions, general specifications, and referenced codes and specifications such as AWS-D1.1 Structural Welding Code, the AISC Code of Standard Practice for steel buildings and bridges, the Steel Joist Institute specifications, and the Steel Deck Institute specifications. · Perform inspections on above-ground storage tanks in accordance with STI SP001 standards. · Perform inspections on bolted connections. · Complete and submit accurate Daily Field Reports. · Perform routine tasks, tests and computations associated with construction materials testing and field observations, under the supervision of the project engineer / project manager. This will include basic concrete testing, in place density testing, utility installation, soil bearing capacity testing, obtaining samples, etc. · Independently operates relevant equipment. · Perform other tasks, as necessary.

Requirements

  • Applied Science or Technical Degree. Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Three years of experience (with an Applied Science or Technical Degree) or five years in steel inspection or quality control inspection testing
  • Understanding of basic engineering concepts
  • Willingness and ability to work on construction sites, performing quality assurance review activities
  • Demonstrated ability to make preliminary evaluations and provide opinions (cause and corrective action) on tasks / problems to NTH’s Project Engineer and/or Project Manager
  • Demonstrated ability to read and apply contract drawings, specifications, and building code reviews
  • Ability to prepare reports summarizing observations and findings associated with the work performed.
  • AWS Certified Weld Inspector, or ability to obtain within one year is required.
  • May be required to perform job duties in the field and office, during non-standard work hours, as necessary.
  • Must be able to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Must possess the physical strength and agility to get to areas on steel structure work environment to complete required inspection duties.
  • Be willing and able to work on construction sites, including elevated platforms, manlifts, scaffolds and swing stages, and along freeway right-of-way while performing review activities.
  • Must have strong written and oral communication skills, be able to work in a team environment as well as independently, demonstrate team-oriented approach to problem-solving, and have strong interpersonal skills for contact with clients and fellow engineers/technicians.

  • Exceptional time management skills, ability to manage multiple assignments at any given time, and have ability to work in a team environment
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license and vehicle insurance, have reliable transportation, and be willing to travel to and conduct field work at job sites as well as offices in Michigan.

Nice To Haves

  • ACI/MCA Concrete Testing Technician Level I or above
  • MDOT Density Technology Certification
  • Aggregate Sampling Certification
  • HMA Sampling for Local Agencies Certification
  • One or more years of field experience in concrete or soils is considered a plus
  • API Certified for tank inspections is considered a plus
  • Additional non-destructive testing qualifications or certifications are considered a plus:
  • SNT-TC-1A Level I or higher
  • MT-Magnetic Particle Testing, UT-Ultrasonic testing
  • PT-Liquid Penetrant testing and tank inspection certifications such as API 653 and/or STI SP001
