About The Position

Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI) is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Senior Battery Electrical System Engineer for the Battery Engineering Design Team. The Senior Battery Electrical System Engineer would support design, development, and validation efforts concerning electrical systems of high-voltage battery systems for electric and hybrid vehicles.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in electrical hardware design and development, preferably in the automotive or energy storage industry
  • Knowledge of high-voltage system design principles, including insulation, grounding, and creepage/clearance requirements under varying environmental conditions
  • Experience with hardware validation tools, such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, Vector CANoe, or CANalyzer
  • Proficiency in automotive standards, such as IEC 60664, ISO 26262
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Ability to work independently and proactively in a fast-paced environment
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to delivering high-quality results

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in electrical engineering or a related field
  • Familiarity with programming languages, such as C, C++, or Python
  • Familiarity with PCB manufacturing processes and design for manufacturability (DFM)
  • Hands-on experience with high-voltage battery packs or energy storage systems
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with BMS hardware supplier to design, develop, and optimize electrical components for battery systems, including Master Control Unit (MCU), Cell Monitor Circuit (CMC), power distribution, contactors, fuses, current sensors, connectors, and wire harnesses
  • Evaluate component selections, such as capacitors, resistors, relays, current sensors, and connectors, against system performance to ensure the components or sub-systems are robust enough to support system maximum performance
  • Ensure hardware designs comply with relevant high-voltage safety standards and automotive regulations
  • Develop safety-critical hardware features, such as isolation monitoring and fault detection
  • Conduct performance and reliability evaluations for components under varying environmental conditions, such as thermal and insulation performance
  • Create electrical system diagrams, schematics, and harness drawings to interpret high and low-voltage systems
  • Collaborate with software and mechanical teams to develop system and sub-system technical requirements and specifications
  • Collaborate with software and mechanical teams to develop DFMEA
  • Prepare detailed design documentation, including schematics, PCB layouts, and bill of materials (BOM)
  • Maintain documentation for test results, validation reports, and design reviews
  • Participate in code reviews and provide feedback to the internal team or suppliers to ensure hardware functions are achieved
  • Act as a project manager, hosting weekly meetings with internal teams and suppliers
  • Work with suppliers to meet design requirements, project timing and achieve cost targets
  • Work with suppliers and manufacturing teams to fabricate prototypes and conduct validation tests
  • Lead troubleshooting and root cause analysis to solve development and quality issues
  • Lead design gate review and program milestone review
  • Lead cost and performance optimization in product development
  • Develop and execute validation plans for high-voltage battery hardware, including electrical stress tests, thermal performance, isolation, and vibration tests
  • Analyze test data to validate the performance and reliability of hardware designs
  • Collaborate with the mechanical team, software team, and suppliers to ensure the seamless integration of hardware components into high-voltage battery systems
  • Troubleshoot high-voltage battery systems and vehicles by using lab and measurement equipment, such as power suppliers, oscilloscopes, Vector CANoe, or CANalyzer, and provide technical feedback to the internal team or suppliers
