Requirements

  • MS degree in chemistry/chemical engineering/materials science with 5+ years of experience with hands-on testing of lithium-ion batteries (PhD preferred)
  • Strong understanding about lithium ion batteries, cell components, and their interactions and failure modes
  • Demonstrated experience on cell characterization and post mortem analysis
  • Strong understanding about the principle of dQdV and dVdQ and their application in degradation and failure mode identification
  • Excellent communication and time management skills
  • Hands on experience in diverse characterization techniques including CT, ICP, XRD, SEM, TEM, FTIR, GCMS, EIS, GITT, CV, PITT, etc.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in data analysis tool such as Python, Minitab, JPM is a plus
  • Familiar to CAN data
  • Experience in cell design and manufacturing

Responsibilities

  • Lead cell-related failure analysis and provide cell-related action guidance to cross functional teams
  • Collaborate with cross functional teams to review manufacturing data and vehicle data and develop fishbone/fault tree analysis to identify if the issues relate to cell
  • Conduct cell failure analysis through electrochemical and physical characterization techniques (non-destructive and destructive test methods), prepare report and communicate results
  • Develop test matrix or new test techniques to validate and identify cell failure modes
  • Collaborate with cross functional teams to develop diagnosis method/technique to detect cell issues or prevent them from happening in the field
  • Work with cell supplier to propose cell design and/or process changes to improve cell quality
  • May travel to cell suppliers, manufacturing plant or field to participate and perform root cause analysis that related to cell issues
  • Develop SOP and train technicians and engineers
