About The Position

The purpose of this position is to serve as the lead attorney for all City contracts and real estate transactions. This role involves drafting and reviewing all City contracts, preparing real estate documents, and handling landlord-tenant leases and related issues, including evictions. Additionally, the position requires drafting and overseeing legal documents related to construction contracts. The person in this role will also assist the two Deputy City Attorneys. Other responsibilities include interacting with external counsel, drafting ordinances, interpreting laws, conducting legal research, and supporting other special projects as needed. The qualified applicant must have experience drafting and reviewing contracts. SALARY DEPENDENT ON QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE

Requirements

  • Experience-Related Requirements Over four years and up to and including eight years.
  • Juris Doctorate
  • Licensed attorney in the State of Texas.
  • Driver's License Required - N Type -N/A Endorsements - N/A
  • The qualified applicant must have experience drafting and reviewing contracts.

Nice To Haves

  • Board certification in real estate or construction law is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Regular and reliable attendance in compliance with given schedules is a mandatory requirement of this position. Schedules may be subject to change with or without advance notice
  • Handles civil litigation in state and federal courts by defending and prosecuting cases, reviewing discovery and motions, attending hearings and trials, researching and briefing information, presenting oral arguments, and documenting records.
  • Completes special projects for the city by researching information, drafting memorandums and legal brief, advising staff, departments and elected officials, and drafting related ordinances for review and adoption.
  • Considers damage claims by reviewing requests or claims, considering litigation, and negotiating with claimants or their attorneys for settlements.
  • Drafts legal documents for review and consideration and advises departments and elected officials by reviewing requests, researching historical information, presenting drafts, editing as appropriate, and presenting final documents.
  • Signs legal documents by reviewing information and ensuring compliance.
