We are seeking a Senior Applications Engineer to lead technical solution development for industrial water and wastewater treatment projects. This role bridges business development and engineering—translating customer needs into competitive, compliant, and innovative treatment system designs. This client-facing technical leadership position bridges business development and engineering execution at UCC Environmental. As a Senior Applications Engineer, you will drive sales success by designing competitive, compliant, and innovative industrial water and wastewater treatment solutions. You act as a trusted technical advisor to clients, consulting engineers, OEMs, and internal teams effectively translating complex customer needs into robust treatment strategies, equipment configurations, technoeconomic analyses, bills of materials, and compelling technical narratives that win projects and support strategic growth in industrial and utility markets. You will lead conceptual-to-detailed engineering for industrial wastewater proposals, delivering technically sound and commercially viable treatment solutions to customers across the globe.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s in chemical, Environmental, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering (ABET required).
  • 8–10 years in industrial water/wastewater process engineering or applications engineering (or 5+ with relevant Master’s).
  • Strong client-facing technical experience (3–5 years).
  • Expertise in treatment processes (softening, metals precipitation, biological, AOP, ZLD, etc.).
  • Hands-on experience with pilot testing, chemical dosing, mass/energy balances, system modeling, and PFD/P&ID development.
  • Field experience with commissioning and troubleshooting.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD/Plant3D, OLI Flowsheet, and Microsoft Office.
  • Strong analytical and technical writing skills; ability to simplify complex topics.
  • Knowledge of industrial processes, controls integration, and treatment system design.
  • Strong communication, decision-making, and time management.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced technical environment.
  • Ability to sit or stand at a desk using a computer 80% of the time
  • Ability to accommodate varying work schedules
  • Ability to climb up and down stairs and ladders
  • Ability to walk around power plants/job sites for extended periods
  • Willingness to travel occasionally for internal team meetings, client meetings, customer site visits, or industry events (<15%)

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s in a water/wastewater discipline preferred.
  • PE license, experience in heavy industry or ZLD systems, and existing industry relationships are preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Develop treatment strategies using water chemistry data; recommend equipment and system configurations.
  • Create process designs including PFDs, P&IDs, mass and energy balances, equipment sizing, and preliminary layouts.
  • Support bench/pilot testing, feasibility studies, and performance validation.
  • Evaluate technologies, CAPEX/OPEX trade-offs, and regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare technical content for proposals: narratives, scopes, cost estimates, and schedules.
  • Partner with sales teams and serve as a technical point of contact for clients and consulting engineers.
  • Support project engineering, vendor reviews, troubleshooting, commissioning, and system optimization.
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to standards, QA/QC, and continuous improvement.
  • All other duties as assigned.
