About The Position

We’re looking for an experienced technical engineer who can work fast, handle changing priorities, work from sparsely defined tasks, and help identify areas for improvement within our team’s current technical ecosystem. We’ll look to you to build and own data pipelines that might just be for the team to do ad hoc analysis and might not need to be officially productionized by IT. You would also determine if/when it makes sense for solutions to be handed off to IT. You’ll be the technical engine inside the Retail Fuel Supply team—owning data pipelines, Python utilities, and lightweight applications that power retail fuel pricing and support fuel procurement and transportation. You’ll use sound engineering practices so that solutions are reliable, documented, and handoff-ready when they need to be owned by IT or be supported by other members of the team.

Requirements

  • 10+ years in Data/Analytics Engineering or similar
  • Expert SQL and intermediate Python
  • Experience with cloud data warehouses (e.g., Snowflake/BigQuery/Redshift)
  • Data modeling (star/snowflake), ELT/ETL patterns, and performance tuning
  • Version control ( Git ), code reviews, and basic CI concepts
  • Job orchestration and environment management
  • Comfort balancing speed vs. rigor and documenting decisions

Nice To Haves

  • dbt (models, tests, docs, exposures)
  • Tableau data source design/performance tuning
  • Streamlit (or similar) for lightweight internal tools
  • Setting up alerts & workflows
  • Familiarity with fuel/energy/logistics data (pricing, dispatch, terminals, carrier ops)
  • Basic API design/consumption; secure secrets handling

Responsibilities

  • Build data pipelines & models: Ingest, transform, and model data (e.g., fuel procurement, fuel transportation, retail fuel pricing and sales) into curated layers for analysts and reports.
  • Write production-quality SQL & Python: Create ELT/ETL scripts, work with APIs, and automate workflows, which will help to speed up decision-making.
  • Rapid prototyping: Deliver quick, “right-sized” solutions that unlock value for the team, without waiting on full IT project cycles or requiring specific IT documentation and processes.
  • Data quality & documentation: Add data tests, monitoring, and clear READMEs so others can use and maintain your work.
  • Orchestration & deployment: Schedule jobs, manage secrets, and set up alerting; package and version your code with Git and lightweight CI.
  • Analytics enablement: Partner with our analysts and report developers; make datasets easy to query, well-documented, and performant.
  • IT partnership: When a solution proves out and reaches a certain level of criticality or needs to be accessible outside of our team, collaborate with the Data Engineering team to productionize the solution.
  • Stakeholder collaboration: Work closely with Retail Fuel Pricing, plus Procurement and Transportation SMEs to clarify requirements and iterate quickly.
