As a member of the Corporate Development team, you will play a critical role in evaluating and executing opportunities that support Nationwide Financials' inorganic growth strategy, including mergers & acquisitions and block reinsurance transactions. In this highly collaborative and strategic role, you will partner closely with Line of Business (LOB) leaders, Finance, Legal, Investments, Tax, and Risk, as well as external advisors and partners, to ensure accurate, insightful, and integrated deal assessments and execution. As a Senior Actuary, you’ll be an expert, providing leadership, direction and oversight for the creation and performance of sophisticated actuarial techniques and procedures and risk analysis. You’ll handle research and direct others to ensure efficient, consistent and integrated data and analysis. We’ll count on you to provide a strategic vision for the team and deliver business recommendations that are crucial to the success of Nationwide and the protection we provide our customers. You’ll work independently and may directly or indirectly lead others.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Finance, Statistics, Actuarial Science, or related field.
  • FSA designation
  • 6+ years of actuarial experience in the insurance or reinsurance industry
  • Advanced knowledge of financial reporting and insurance accounting under multiple regimes, including US GAAP, US Statutory, US Tax, and Bermuda EBS
  • Strong analytical, investigative, and problem-solving skills
  • High attention to detail while maintaining a big-picture perspective
  • Self-starter with intellectual curiosity; ability to navigate ambiguity and seek solutions without perfect information under some guidance
  • Ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, making informed recommendations under pressure
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, capable of conveying complex actuarial concepts to diverse stakeholders
  • Advanced technical skills in Excel/VBA and database applications
  • Typically, at least eight years of actuarial experience.
  • Experienced knowledge of actuarial business functions, statistical methods of analysis, actuarial models, actuarial software and databases; knowledge of company operations, products, systems and actuarial methodologies.
  • Knowledge of industry and regulatory practices is vital.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products (including VBA within Access and Excel), analytical software (such as tableau) and programming languages.
  • Proficient level of organizational agility, influencing skills, strategic agility, inspiring others, business perspective and accounting.
  • Mastery level of perspective, problem solving, customer focus, dealing with ambiguity, drive for results, analysis, learning.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience and knowledge with asset features, asset modeling (AXIS or MG-ALFA) and ALM techniques is highly preferred
  • M&A transactions and corporate development experience is highly preferred
  • Strong understanding of universal life products (UL, ULSG, IUL, VUL), including product features, pricing, financial reporting (Statutory & GAAP), and source of earnings analysis is highly preferred

Responsibilities

  • Perform actuarial pricing, modeling and structuring activities for corporate development opportunities.
  • Conduct transaction due diligence and risk assessment by analyzing actuarial appraisals, statutory filings, assumption documentation, policy forms, asset portfolios listing, existing reinsurance arrangements and other relevant materials.
  • Develop and maintain robust financial models and forecasts to evaluate transaction economics, profitability metrics, tax effects and capital implications.
  • Establish baseline assumptions and perform sensitivity analyses to identify key risks and provide actionable insights for decision-making.
  • Partner with internal cross-functional teams (LOB, Finance, Legal, Investment, Tax, and Risk) as well as external consultant and legal counsel throughout the deal process to make sure deal assumptions and treaty terms are accurately reflected and aligned with strategic objectives.
  • Prepare deal materials for executive committees and clearly communicate results and recommendations to senior management, supporting informed and timely strategic decision‑making
  • Prepare comprehensive pricing and risk analysis reports summarizing findings, assumptions, methodologies, risks and recommendations, ensuring compliance with ASOPs and internal standards.
  • Assist in treaty negotiations by evaluating NGE governance language, trust and collateral requirements, investment guidelines, recapture provisions, and other key contractual terms
  • Build proof-of-concept models for new corporate development opportunities or innovative reinsurance solutions.
  • Develop and refine analytical tools, templates, and processes to enhance transaction evaluation efficiency.
  • Participate in special projects, including initiatives related to balance sheet optimization, market intelligence, and other strategic priorities.
  • Provides strategic direction and knowledge for the compilation, categorization and analysis of data and financial reporting and analysis.
  • Constructs sophisticated testing tools and analyzes product calculations.
  • Leads, provides expertise and builds strategies for pricing and implementation of products.
  • Constructs, maintains and completes Actuarial, Projection & Valuation Models.
  • Analyzes risks and reinsurance for lines of business.
  • Establishes reserves and other valuation items under multiple accounting regimes (statutory, GAAP and tax) for products.
  • Builds cohesive presentations, communication strategies and recommendations of actuarial findings that are suitable for technical and non-technical audiences at the OCFO leadership level.
  • May perform other responsibilities as assigned.
