Position Summary: The Senior Academic Advisor uses advanced advising knowledge and expertise to perform the full range of academic advising responsibilities, which include representing the University in public settings, completing administrative tasks essential to the advising mission, and delivering accurate, high-quality information to students through individual appointments, group sessions, and workshops. Using appreciative inquiry and systematic administrative tracking, the Senior Academic Advisor assesses and interprets students’ needs to deliver individualized services that promote student success. In addition to core advising duties, the position is responsible for higher-level administrative functions and strategic initiatives that support and advance the advising goals of the College and the University.

Requirements

  • This position requires a master’s degree in education, Counseling or academic field directly related to the Advisor's specific responsibilities and 7 years of academic advising experience, two years of which must have been at the Sr. Academic Advisor level or equivalent.
  • Degree Equivalency Clause: Four years of direct experience for a bachelor’s degree.
  • Senate Bill 1310- The Florida Senate (https://www.flsenate.gov/Session/Bill/2023/1310) is conditional upon meeting all employment eligibility requirements in the U.S.
  • SB 1310: Substitution of Work Experience for Postsecondary Education Requirements
  • A public employer may include a postsecondary degree as a baseline requirement only as an alternative to the number of years of direct experience required, not to exceed:
  • (a) Two years of direct experience for an associate degree;
  • (b) Four years of direct experience for a bachelor’s degree;
  • (c) Six years of direct experience for a master’s degree;
  • (d) Seven years of direct experience for a professional degree; or
  • (e) Nine years of direct experience for a doctoral degree
  • Related work experience may not substitute for any required licensure, certification, or registration required for the position of employment as established by the public employer and indicated in the advertised description of the position of employment.
  • Minimum Qualifications that require a high school diploma are exempt from SB 1310.

Responsibilities

  • Using variety of advising approaches based on student need, will perform outstanding advising and all related duties, including creation of academic plans, assistance with major selection, and career identification, adherence to best practices in advising and attention to measures of student success.
  • Provides high level problem-solving assistance, insight into the logic of the curriculum, and leadership to the in COED advising team to ensure all students receive timely and accurate assistance.
  • Performs all advising administrative related duties: including maintaining and updating confidential advising records, reporting and analysis of advising data.
  • Builds and maintains strong working relationships with academic departments and other university units and develop advising programming collaboratively to advance the advising mission and coordination of student services.
  • Serves in a leadership role in various advising related activities, including committee work, advising programming, student communication, and coordinating opportunities for professional development, campus engagement and training for students, staff and advisors.
  • Coordinates and serves as a mentor and trainer for advisors regarding academic policies at the University, state and federal levels. This includes educating others on university degree requirements, transfer articulation, and state licensure requirements.
  • Assist in providing inclusive supervision; manage leave, ethics disclosures, performance management, professional development, hiring/onboarding, turnover, and address escalated student concerns.
  • Ensure timely and accurate completion of advising projects; serve as liaison and advocate for advising needs; support program assessment and act as a point of contact for leadership.
  • Foster a collaborative, positive, and appreciative work environment; mentor advisors in high-quality developmental advising; model excellence and support strategic initiatives.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of academic programs, HR policies, advising systems/technology, and actively pursue professional and leadership development.
  • Performs related duties as required or deemed necessary to meet academic advising goals.
