Part-time Weekend SQL Server DBA

Xtivia IncColorado Springs, CO

About The Position

We are looking for a Jr-level SQL Server DBA to join XTIVIA’s support team. This role is built specifically for high-density weekend coverage, acting as the first line of defense for critical SQL Server Agent alerts and urgent customer calls. You will ensure our customers' production workloads stay online, optimized, and secure while the weekday team is off. You will connect to multiple clients, handle live screen-share sessions, and troubleshoot issues on the fly-from sudden tempdb contention to fixing broken replication-keeping the customer calm and informed throughout the process.

Requirements

  • 2-5 years working as a production support SQL Server DBA.
  • Hands-on experience administering SQL Server 2012 through 2025, including instance-level best practices (MAXDOP, cost threshold, max server memory) and security protocols.
  • Ability to write T-SQL from scratch, read execution plans, identify parameter sniffing, resolve deadlocks, and rewrite poorly performing queries, stored procedures, and triggers.
  • A solid grasp of native backups and point-in-time restores, database file management, and patching instances.
  • Practical experience building, troubleshooting, and failing over Always On Availability Groups (AGs) and Windows Server Failover Clusters (WSFC).
  • Familiarity with deploying, executing, and troubleshooting SSIS packages.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills with the ability to explain complex engine behaviors to non-DBA clients.

Nice To Haves

  • An Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field; alternatively, 2+ years of demonstrated technical competency through relevant hands-on career experience.
  • Experience migrating or managing SQL Server workloads in the Cloud (AWS RDS/EC2 or Azure SQL/Managed Instance).
  • Active Microsoft Certifications (e.g., Azure Data Fundamentals, Azure Database Administrator Associate).
  • Experience configuring and deploying SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS).
  • A background in technical support or call center support.

Responsibilities

  • Acting as the first line of defense for critical SQL Server Agent alerts, severity errors, and urgent customer calls regarding issues with their SQL Server Systems.
  • Executing scheduled maintenance windows—examples of requests: applying Cumulative Updates (CUs), managing index/statistics rebuilds, running DBCC CHECKDB, and safely deploying schema changes.
  • Working through the ticket backlog and picking up specific handoffs (like monitoring a long-running migration) from the weekday DBA team.
  • Since this is a remote role, you will need to manage your own time, stay proactive, and communicate clearly in our team channels throughout your shift.
  • Accurately recording ticket and timesheet entries for client billing.

Benefits

  • a 401(k) plan with a company match
  • an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) for you and your family
  • comprehensive identity and fraud protection
  • flexible work options
  • a specialized paid time off program for our hourly team members, providing 80 hours (10 days) of PTO annually
  • 9 paid holidays each year
  • paid training and certification opportunities
