About The Position

The University of Oklahoma's Gallogly College of Engineering is seeking a Spray Technician to join our team and assist with the preparation, application, and testing of experimental primers and coatings on test coupons. The technician will work primarily in a paint booth, ensuring precise application of primers, final coatings, and topcoats according to manufacturer specifications. Additionally, the technician will perform tests on the coupons using mechanical, electrochemical, and surface analysis methods. The ideal candidate must be detail-oriented to ensure that all project requirements, as specified by the project sponsor, are met. Self-motivation and the ability to work independently with little to no supervision are key qualities for this role. The incumbent will communicate effectively with faculty investigators, the project manager, and other staff to ensure timelines are met and all objectives achieved. Lastly, the incumbent will perform various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED or Trade School Certificate, AND: 24 months experience as a brush painter or closely related experience.
  • Ability to perform precise and controlled spray applications.
  • Strong commitment to safety, quality, and project timelines.
  • Familiarity with or the ability to learn and perform a variety testing methods, including mechanical and electrochemical techniques.
  • Strong attention to detail: Ensuring coatings and tests meet the requirements set by the project sponsor.
  • Safety awareness and equipment maintenance: Knowledge of safety protocols in a paint booth environment, including personal protective equipment (PPE), as well as the ability to maintain spray equipment and the workspace.
  • Ability to manage time efficiently, ensuring all tasks are completed on schedule.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow precise instructions.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Valid Oklahoma driver’s license in order to drive University vehicles or ability to obtain within 30 days from hire date. Traveling is < 5%25 of the job.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience in spray painting, coating application, or surface preparation preferred but not required (training provided).
  • Prior experience with a variety testing methods, including mechanical and electrochemical techniques preferred but not required (training provided).
  • Prior experience with safety awareness and equipment maintenance preferred but not required (training provided).
  • Knowledge of safety protocols in a paint booth environment, including personal protective equipment (PPE), as well as the ability to maintain spray equipment and the workspace preferred but not required (training provided).
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to effectively convey project progress.
  • Knowledge of Surface Preparation and Coating Techniques: Understanding the procedures for surface preparation and the ability to apply primers, topcoats, and final coatings in accordance with technical guidelines.
  • Basic mechanical and testing skills are a plus, but a willingness to learn is essential.
