About The Position

The Daily Sentinel is seeking a full-time sports writer with photography skills to cover high school and Division II college sports, as well as outdoor recreation. The role emphasizes storytelling beyond game recaps, focusing on compelling features and in-depth enterprise stories. The successful candidate will engage with the local sports community and utilize various media formats to enhance coverage.

Requirements

• Experience or willingness to learn in sports writing and photography.
• Proficiency with a camera and experience photographing sports.
• Intimate familiarity with AP style.
• Excellent spelling and grammar skills.
• Strong knowledge of a wide variety of sports and outdoor recreation activities.

Nice To Haves

• Bachelor's degree in journalism preferred.
• Experience working in the field or as a qualified recent college graduate.

Responsibilities

• Cover high school and Division II college sports, as well as outdoor recreation.
• Write compelling features and in-depth enterprise stories.
• Demonstrate well-developed reporting and writing skills.
• Work quickly and accurately on deadline.
• Be proficient and creative in copy editing and layout and design, preferably with InDesign.
• Connect with student-athletes, parents, coaches, and readers.
• Utilize social media to promote coverage and aid in reporting.
