About The Position

The Opelika-Auburn News is seeking a dedicated sports reporter to serve as the lead basketball writer, covering high school sports and Auburn University basketball. This role offers the opportunity to engage with a passionate sports community and produce compelling stories that resonate with local fans. The reporter will work closely with the sports editor and other team members to ensure comprehensive coverage of basketball and other sports throughout the year.

Requirements

• Self-motivated with good energy and a strong work ethic.
• Willingness to work a flexible schedule.
• Two to five years of sports reporting experience preferred, especially covering a college beat.
• Four-year degree in Journalism or comparable professional experience preferred.
• Prepared to present five writing clips and examples of multimedia/audio/video work.
• Experience in investigative reporting on a sports beat, strong profiles, and alternative story forms.
• Adept at growing audience through engaging content.
• Savvy with social media and multimedia tools.
• Ability to meet tight deadlines and travel when needed.
• Valid Driver License with satisfactory Motor Vehicle Report.

Responsibilities

• Writing compelling and well-sourced feature stories on area athletes and coaches.
• Producing a combination of daily stories and in-depth projects.
• Keeping track of local results and athlete performances at both high school and college levels.
• Traveling to games and meeting sources as assigned.
• Ensuring that photo, video, and graphics are planned for each story.
• Writing breaking news stories for websites and social media platforms.
• Understanding the importance of online presentation and utilizing social media to engage a growing digital audience.
• Collaborating effectively with teammates on a three-person sports desk.
• Adhering to all company policies.
