About The Position

Under the direction of the Sports Director, the Sports Instructor is responsible for upholding the image and core values of the Attleboro YMCA. The Sports Instructor ensures that participants in any program have a positive experience resulting in continued engagement with the Y through membership and/or other programs.

Requirements

  • prior recreational experience in a variety of sports
  • prior experience coaching various sports to different age groups
  • knowledge of child growth/development and appropriate age characteristics
  • a positive, friendly attitude and strong interpersonal skills
  • evidence of strong relationship-building skills and outstanding communication skills
  • ability to work effectively with a diverse group of people from all social and economic segments of the community
  • ability to stay calm and respond effectively in an emergency
  • quick, effective decision-making skills
  • Must be physically fit and able to lead and participate in a variety of sports and physical activities including running, jumping, squatting, and lifting.
  • Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, such as sports equipment and furniture.
  • Must be able to talk, hear and communicate effectively with others including the ability to communicate verbally and to project one’s voice across distance in loud situations.
  • Must CPR and First Aid certified (or achieve within 90 days of hire)
  • Annual Child Abuse Prevention Training
  • Night and weekend availability is required.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver high quality programs including instructional sports classes, birthday parties & rentals, and competitive programs/leagues.
  • Assist in development of curriculum for classes to ensure a high level of quality and consistency between classes and instructors.
  • Serve program participants in an upbeat manner to provide a positive and enjoyable environment.
  • Behave in a professional manner, exemplify a healthy lifestyle, and demonstrate a genuine interest and dedication to improved health.
  • Maintain open communication with the Sports Director and other staff about any facility or department issues including concerns or problems related to staffing, members, and programs.
  • Understand and abide by YMCA policies, facility policies, accident/incident reports, code of conduct, etc.
  • Work as a team player supporting co-workers and the mission of the YMCA in the community.
  • Start and end classes on time and arrive 10 minutes before class start for any necessary set-up.
  • Keep sporting equipment organized and report damaged equipment to Sports Director.
  • Attend staff and committee meetings as needed or directed by your supervisor.
  • Ensure that YMCA policies and best practices are followed and that classes and programs are operated in a safe environment.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
