About The Position

The Sports Instructor - Youth Athletics is a Part-Time Position. We offer competitive compensation, PTO and an employee discount for part-time employees. Job Purpose: Youth Sports Class Instructor leads classes of participants in various youth sports for ages 4-9 in District 97 Schools and Park District Parks. Essential Functions: Instruct youth sports classes that include: basketball, football, soccer, floor hockey, and t-ball Create progressive daily lesson plans for each class that allow participants to build on their skills and abilities. Introduce and reinforce to students different sports terminology and rules Greet participants as they arrive and take daily attendance. Arrive on site 15 minutes prior to the start of class. Understand and follow all Park District and program rules. Communicate and enforce Park District rules and policies to parents, participants and the public. Provide excellent customer service and maintain a positive public image by addressing questions and concerns from staff, patrons, participants, and parents immediately. Contact and ask for assistance from supervisor or other Park District staff when necessary. Become familiar with participants and parents; know their names, personalities, skills and interests. Keep program supplies, equipment, and facility space clean, organized, and safe. Report maintenance needs to supervisor. Identify and observe equipment daily for possible maintenance needs and adjustments. Complete attendance reports, safety logs, accident and incident reports, discipline logs and report any issues to supervisor. Assist Program Supervisor with scheduling of staff for specific classes Assist Program Supervisor with communicating to parents about class cancellations, make-up classes, or changes in schedule. Additional Functions: Occasionally assist with events and programs. Complete other duties as assigned by supervisor or other Park District administrative personnel.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must possess a High School Diploma.
  • Minimum 3 years of youth sports coaching or teaching
  • Ability to verbally communicate and physically demonstrate instructions and skills to students.
  • Certification in advanced Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), First Aid and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) within 1 month of employment and keep certification current. The District provides this training.
  • Ability to work with groups of participants (up to 15 at a time) without direct supervision.
  • Must have the ability to solve problems as they arise and be able to perform tasks without supervision.
  • Must have the ability to be firm with participants when necessary, enforce park district rules, and make sound decisions in order to secure the safety and well-being of all participants, staff, facilities, and equipment.
  • Must be willing to travel to various locations throughout Oak Park and arrive in a timely manner
  • Ability to work independently without supervision and the ability to lead other staff
  • Ability to present ideas and recommendations in a concise manner.
  • Ability to understand and carry out verbal and/or written instructions efficiently and effectively and to read and understand printed material.
  • Ability to operate assigned equipment.
  • Ability to effectively interact and communicate well with others.
  • Ability to interpret and explain division and District policies and procedures.
  • Ability to follow safety guidelines and exercise judgment in all aspects of responsibility.
  • Ability to resolve conflict safely, calmly and effectively.

  • Associate's Degree or above preferred.
