About The Position

The Y has been a trusted leader in youth development for generations. From first steps to first jobs, we create opportunities for young people to grow stronger, lead with confidence, and build a future full of possibility-through sports, tutoring, mentoring, and more. The Specialty Instructor provides innovative and exciting after school specialty clubs and sports programs for high school students to help them advance their skills, all while having fun. In this role, the Specialty Instructor will partner with the YMCA after school program to provide after school specialty enrichment to high school students. The Specialty Instructor should specialize in a variety of disciplines with a strong background and experience in their particular fields of specialty. Level I Instructor: Photography, Dance (all styles), Visual Art (must possess a AA degree or higher), Intro to Coding, General Sports and other related specialties and disciplines. Level II Instructor: Musician (instrument), Advance VR/AI/App Development/Coding, SAT/ACT Prep, College Essay Prep, Robotics, Circuitry, Graphic Design, Film Production, Theater, Specialized Sports. This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through healthy living, youth development, and social impact. The Instructor creates positive, nurturing relationships with older youth (high school students) while building cooperative relationships with parents/caregivers, staff, and partners. Promotes and supports the potential of all youth in programs/classes and facilitates peer-to-peer connections as part of the overall program experience. Provides direction to support children in the program and teaches curriculum that is focused on mastering specific skills. Provides a quality experience to children and parents that focuses on building achievement and belonging in youth and relationships among youth and within families. This is a seasonal position offered during the school year and on school days only.

Requirements

  • AGE: Twenty-one years or older
  • EDUCATION: High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completed semester units. license, or certifications in area of focus preferred but not required.
  • RELATED EXPERIENCE: Previous experience working with teens and high school students in a group setting (preferred).
  • Ability to plan, organize and implement age- appropriate and developmentally appropriate program activities around a specific area of focus.
  • Previous experience with diverse populations preferred.
  • Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.
  • SPECIALIZED SKILLS: Strong character values (respect, responsibility, honesty, caring); strong communication skills; emotional maturity
  • LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS: Current approved First Aid; Adult, Infant and Child CPR Certifications.
  • Completion of child abuse prevention training prior to first day in the program.
  • WORK ENVIRONMENT/MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS You must have the physical, visual, and auditory ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to plan, lead, and participate in activities.
  • The job is performed in indoor as well as outdoor environments throughout the year.
  • Ability to lift 30-35lbs

Responsibilities

  • Nurtures high school students through purposeful programming dedicated to building achievement and belonging in youth and relationships among youth and within families.
  • Maintains close visual supervision of a group of assigned students, following ratios based on specific program/class. Ratio is 1:20, one instructor for up to every 20 students in program. No student is left unsupervised while in program or staff alone with a student at any time while attending program/class.
  • Compliance with all grant requirements, including attendance records, compliance training, grant reporting, etc.
  • Help students manage behavior using a positive approach, including proactive strategies, redirection and using constructive discipline with natural and logical consequences.
  • Actively supports the YMCA is committed to inclusion and compliance with the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) where appropriate.
  • Planning and implementing club based based on a specific topic and skill mastery, culminating in an exposition/showcase at the end of the session, if planned by supervisor.
  • Adheres to program standards including safety and cleanliness standards, maintains site and equipment, and maintains required program records in accordance with YMCA expectations.
  • Cultivates positive relationships and maintains effective communication with parents.
  • Engages parents as volunteers and connects them to the YMCA.
  • Attends and participates in family events, program activities, staff meetings and training.
  • Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies.
  • Follows reporting procedures and proactively responds to situations to ensure a safe environment for all involved.
  • Understands and complies with current federal, state, local regulations, and YMCA policies and procedures at all times.
  • Maintains positive relationships with parents, other YMCA team members and community partners.
  • Models’ relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions.
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings, as required.
  • Uphold YMCA policies for safety, supervision, mandated reporting and risk management.
  • Demonstrate the YMCA Core Values of Caring, Respect, Honesty and Responsibility when working with members, guests, volunteers and fellow staff.
  • Demonstrate competencies in, and willingness to develop, in the Cause-Driven Leadership areas of Mission Advancement, Collaboration, Operational Effectiveness and Personal Growth.
