About The Position

Organization's Summary Statement: Reporting to the Executive Director, the Sponsored Research Specialist will manage post award grant processes for several programs within UMIACS. This includes reporting to PI's, on a monthly basis and working with them regularly to ensure that their funds are being used efficiently and strategically to accomplish the scope of work, as described in their proposals; reconciling accounts, including reviewing expenses to ensure that they are compliant with the Uniform Guidance as well as UMD policies; performing transfers and other account corrections, as needed; and continuing to learn and advance within the UMIACS organization. The University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies (UMIACS) is an interdisciplinary computing research institute that brings together faculty, researchers, and students from across departments to tackle major scientific and societal challenges in areas such as national defense, precision medicine, big data, cybersecurity, language and culture, and more. The UMIACS business staff works closely with faculty to support proposal development and the management of large, complex sponsored research projects. Our team is experienced, highly capable, and collaborative, sharing knowledge and supporting one another daily. To support these efforts, we are seeking a colleague who demonstrates strong attention to detail and communicates clearly, positively, and effectively with colleagues, customers, and direct reports. The successful candidate will have experience supporting sponsored research activities, including post-award management and financial tracking, and familiarity with federal and non-federal sponsor regulations and compliance requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Three (3) years of professional grants, finance, or accounting experience.
  • Knowledge of grants related policies and procedures, and federal, state, and other applicable related laws, rules, regulations, and ordinances.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in the use of Microsoft Office and Google Workspace products.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize assignments.
  • Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, regulations, and laws.
  • Experience supporting sponsored research activities, including post-award management and financial tracking, and familiarity with federal and non-federal sponsor regulations and compliance requirements.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills to manage multiple awards and deadlines, identify and resolve financial discrepancies in a timely manner, and work independently while also collaborating effectively as part of a team.

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of Concur, Workday, and HCM systems is expected, with expertise in BA4 highly preferred.
