The Splicer maintains the outside plant and is responsible for the overall structure and maintenance of the fiber to the home network. The Splicer may repair, inspect, design, and construct the outside plant with special emphasis on cable splicing. As established by policy and procedures: Develop splice schematics Fusion splice fiber optic cables in accordance with splice schematics or on an ad-hoc basis in compliance with network design standards Test fiber optic cables with OTDR and other testing equipment and identify poorly performing splices for corrective action Use fusion-based fiber splicing (both single and ribbon) operation, and ability to utilize an OTDR for testing/maintenance requirements Manage tool inventory and ensure proper documentation, maintenance and safe operation. Work Environment This position is exposed to external weather conditions including rain, sleet, snow, etc., as well as a varying degree of cold and hot temperatures. This role routinely uses standard office equipment This role will use specialized equipment such as fusion splicers and fiber testing equipment. Physical Demands This position requires the ability lift up to 70 pounds and to stand, walk on uneven terrain, and drive company vehicles on a daily basis. Duties will involve climbing ladders or using gaffs to access and retrieve objects from aerial infrastructure, as well as stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling to retrieve heavy objects from underground vaults. This role requires precise hand and finger dexterity for splicing small, color coded fiber cables, along with accurate color perception to distinguish all fiber optic color groups, including blue, orange, green, brown, slate, white, red, black, yellow, violet, rose and aqua. Frequent repetitive movements of the hands, arms, shoulder and fingers are essential. Work will be performed in outdoor environments and may involve exposure to extreme weather conditions such as rain, sleet and high winds. Position Type and Expected Hours of Work This is a full-time position, and typical work hours are on a four/ten work schedule, Monday through Thursday or Tuesday through Friday 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with after hours maintenance and emergency repair work occasionally required for outages and storm damage repairs. Travel Ability to travel to the different district offices required. Occasional travel to training seminars and/or conferences. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent required Experience with outside and inside plant in telecommunications or equivalent training Experience with fiber optic FTTH/FTTX preferred Experience as a fiber splicer preferred Valid Oregon drivers license and insurability. Must meet the requirements of pre-employment drug screening and comply with company drug and alcohol policy while employed.
