About The Position

Splicers are responsible for installing, preparing and troubleshooting fiber optic cables. They will have an understanding of the different types of cables, equipment, cable color codes and techniques used for splicing and installing fiber. They will be required to test, troubleshoot and care for any issues related to fiber optic cables.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of the Splicer l training course and 1000 hours of in the field splicing (travel and training hours not included)
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Class A CDL preferred, For-Hire Endorsement required
  • Lift 50-75 lbs unassisted
  • Must be able to distinguish colors

Responsibilities

  • Understands industry safety rules and operating procedures.
  • Has the ability to work independently without supervision.
  • Follows direction regarding customer requirements for completion.
  • Must have knowledge of fiber and tools necessary for fiber splicing.
  • Must be able to identify the fiber color coding to tube/fiber range.
  • Understanding of loose tube and mass fusion (ribbon) splicing.
  • Inspects cables to locate any issues, understands how to inspect and clean fiber optic connectors.
  • Understanding of cable preparation and fiber placement within splice cases or ancillary equipment.
  • Complete records documentation such as fiber sequentials and GPS coordinates at each location.
  • Understands how to correctly document and label directional ties.
  • Should be able to prep and splice a full 144F in 4-6 hours with 141/144 quality pass rate.
  • Must be able to communicate with management, customer and/or homeowners about the project, process and answer basic questions.
  • Knows how to install a NID (Network Interface Device) properly.
  • Knows how to place slack coil in aerial case.
  • Can properly place pole risers.
  • Can properly install a splitter in a cabinet.
  • Understands OTDRs and OTDR testing and issue(s) isolation, remediation, and reporting.
  • Knowledge of OTDR, Power Meter, OLTs and Red Light Trouble Shooting.
  • Knowledge of fiber optic link loss and power budgets.
  • Clean job site during and upon completion of work and properly dispose of debris.
