About The Position

The Director of the Spindletop-Gladys City Boomtown Museum provides dynamic leadership for the planning, organization, staffing, and operations of the museum, which features 17 replica buildings from the first Spindletop oil boom era (1890-1910). This role involves collaboration with university administration, museum staff, and volunteers to enhance fundraising, exhibitions, collections management, educational activities, and community outreach programs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in museum studies, art history, or related field.
  • 3 years of experience in leadership or supervisory roles within a museum or cultural institution.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of museum standards and best practices.
  • Experience in fundraising and grant writing.
  • Strong writing and public speaking skills.
  • Proficiency in managing museum operations and personnel matters.
  • Ability to develop and manage an annual operating budget.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in museum studies, art history, or related field.
  • 5 years of progressively responsible experience in a related field.

Responsibilities

  • Develop the strategic direction and initiatives to fulfill the museum's mission and increase awareness.
  • Manage and maintain the museum's property, facilities, and collections.
  • Direct museum operations including development, education, finance, and staffing.
  • Lead and develop part-time staff, volunteers, contractors, and consultants.
  • Create an effective communications plan to raise the museum's profile.
  • Serve as spokesperson and chief advocate for the Spindletop Museum.
  • Coordinate with various university departments for consistent programming.
  • Establish strong community partnerships and enhance the museum's public image.
  • Manage dining venues for the Southeast Texas Community.
