About The Position

Responsible for administration and direct application of Speech/Language Pathology treatment modalities as prescribed by a referring physician. Evaluates, plans, directs and treats all appropriate patients referred for speech/language, cognitive, and dysphagia evaluations as well as evidenced-based treatments to restore function, maintain safety and prevent or improve disability following disease or injury. Assists patients to obtain maximum performance, improve quality of life and maintain function while learning and implementing a routine within the constraints of their diagnosis. Functions as part of the MDI Hospital multidisciplinary team to support speech pathology patient evaluations, plans and treatments for inpatient services, short term rehab, and emergency department. Participates in quality improvement activities within the department and participates in clinical quality indicator activities. Assures personal competency. Provides information related to departmental budget considerations in relationship to Speech Pathology needs for optimum patient care and service. Assists in scheduling of patient visits for speech pathology evaluation and treatment. Performs some administrative duties at the delegation of the Director of Integrated Care. Participates in infection control, safety and educational programs, both in the department and on an organizational basis.

Requirements

  • Holds a masters degree from an approved college or school of speech/language pathology.
  • Current Maine State License in speech pathology (as Speech Pathologist).
  • Knowledge of principles and practice of speech pathology.
  • Performance of technical skills related to speech pathology.
  • Knowledge of infection control, sterile technique and related impact on rehabilitative medicine practice and equipment.
  • Current BCLS certification.
  • Holds and maintains certificate of clinical competence through the American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA).
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Knowledge of equipment utilized in the diagnosis, evaluation and treatment of speech pathology.
  • Must be able to determine appropriate patient procedures and evaluate results.
  • Ability to maintain control and respond calmly and positively during crisis situations (i.e., Code Blue).
  • Appropriate telephone communication skills.
  • Ability to read and communicate effectively in English.
  • Strong written and verbal skills.
  • Physical and mental ability to perform services in diverse settings.
  • Walking, standing, sitting are required.

Nice To Haves

  • Current experience in a hospital setting is preferred.
  • Additional languages preferred.
