About The Position

The Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) will provide evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment for patients with speech, language, cognitive-communication, voice, swallowing, and/or auditory processing disorders in an inpatient rehabilitation setting. The SLP will also be responsible for completing GG (Functional Abilities and Goals) scoring as part of the IRF-PAI (Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility – Patient Assessment Instrument) to track patient progress and meet CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services) compliance requirements.

Requirements

  • Education: Master’s or Doctoral degree in Speech-Language Pathology from an accredited program.
  • Licensure: Current state SLP license (or eligible).
  • Certification: Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP) from ASHA (or in CFY year).
  • Skills: 1. Strong dysphagia management skills (MBSS/FEES preferred but not always required). 2. Ability to handle fast-paced, medically complex cases (ICU, stroke, trauma). 3. Knowledge of CMS guidelines, IRF compliance, and hospital protocols. 4. Proficiency in EMR systems (EPIC, Cerner, Meditech).

Nice To Haves

  • LSVT LOUD, MBSImP, or FEES certification.
  • Experience with trach/vent patients.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive evaluations for patients with: 1. Dysphagia (including clinical swallow evaluations, FEES, or MBSS if certified) 2. Aphasia, dysarthria, apraxia (stroke, TBI, neurodegenerative diseases) 3. Cognitive-communication deficits (delirium, post-ICU recovery, dementia) 4. Tracheostomy patients (speech & swallow rehab) 5. AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) needs
  • Develop and implement individualized treatment plans based on patient needs.
  • Collaborate with physicians, nurses, PT/OT, respiratory therapy, and case management/social worker for coordinated care.
  • Educate patients, families, and medical staff on swallowing precautions, communication strategies, and safe diet recommendations.
  • Educate patients and families on home safety based on goals of rehab stay.
  • Train caregivers and provide guidance on post-discharge exercises and adaptive strategies.
  • Participate in weekly team meetings to discuss patient progress and discharge planning.
  • Communicate effectively with physicians, nurses, case managers, and other therapists.
  • Adjust treatment plans based on patient response and medical status.
  • Complete GG functional scoring (Section GG of IRF-PAI) for admission, discharge, and periodic intervals.
  • Ensure accurate and timely documentation in electronic medical record.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings to review GG scores and adjust care plans.
  • Maintain compliance with Medicare, Joint Commission, and facility documentation standards.
