Speech Pathology/Therapist Reporting to the Manager of Rehabilitation, responsibilities include diagnostic, evaluative, and therapeutic procedures for the treatment of those disabled by illness or injury when prescribed by a licensed physician. The Speech Therapist will provide speech and language treatments to patients.

Requirements

  • Experience in diagnosing and treating swallow disorders required
  • Ability to analyze test results to determine patients’ communicative abilities and to determine necessary therapy required
  • Completion of Master’s Degree required in Speech-Language Pathology from an accredited educational institution required
  • License to practice speech pathology by the California State Board of Medical Examiners and Certificate of clinical competence (ASHA) or a RPE/CFY applicant supervised by licensed Speech Pathologist following State and ASHA guidelines required
  • Current BLS Certificate required

  • One year work experience in the acute hospital setting preferred

Responsibilities

  • Preparatory Data Gathering - Obtains appropriate physician order. Reviews patient's records and test results. Confers with physician, nursing and other members of the health care team, as needed.
  • Evaluation Skills - Performs evaluations in a setting appropriate to the patient's disability, age and psychosocial needs. Exhibits respect for the needs of the patient and family. Exhibits accuracy in performing patient evaluations; interprets results within scope of licensure. Obtains medical history. Ensures the initiation and documentation of age appropriate diagnostic and prognostic evaluation of speech/language skills. Utilizes functional status classification measures to record the current functional status of the patient; utilizes chronological/mental age terms for minors. Utilizes a comprehensive approach to patient evaluation and implementation of the therapy program; assesses physical, social and envoronmental needs of the patient within scope of practice. Develops realistic, measurable long-term and short-term goals. Discusses goals with patient/family and other health care team members. Performs evaluation within twenty-four hours of receiving an inpatient order.
  • Treatment Skills - Demonstrates innovation, skill and efficiency in developing and implementing patient treatment programs. Exhibits ability to design treatment programs for patients with varying degrees/types of disabilities and multiple medical problems. Performs professional procedures which meet the standards of the profession and changing needs of the patient. Exhibits good judgement in evaluating techniques, adjusting methodology to elicit the desired change/reach desired goals. Develops innovative home programs individualized to meet the needs of the patient/family and instructs the patient and family in these programs.
  • Discharge - Maintains active and supportive communication with patient/family and members of the health care team, as appropriate, regarding the outcome of evaluation activities, treatment programs, clinical concerns, home care programs and other issues related to the progress and discharge of patient through the therapeutic process. Initiates considration of patient discharge on the day of evaluation to facilitate transition to home care environment.
