About The Position

Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) Clinical Fellow will provide 12 months of direct patient care under the mentorship of a certified SLP with more than 2 years of experience who meets American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) requirements for supervision. Initial 9 months will focus on achieving independence with skills consistent with an entry-level practitioner in the acute hospital environment. Remaining 3 months will focus on achieving competence in a specialty area of interest to the Clinical Fellow and approved by mentor.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology or equivalent from an accredited institution.
  • Meet criteria to apply for Clinical Fellowship with the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA).
  • Completion of at least one semester internship in an acute care hospital environment during graduate program.
  • Meet criteria for limited license in Speech-Language Pathology through the Maryland Board of Audiology/Hearing Aid Dispensers/Speech and Language Pathologists
  • Current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS CPR certification

Responsibilities

  • Conduct clinical evaluations and treatments with a variety of ages and diagnoses using evidenced based techniques.
  • Complete documentation according to established departmental policies and procedures and according to regulatory requirements.
  • Independently problem solve patient care issues and use clinical decision-making skills to triage caseload.
  • Achieve clinical competency according to department policy in at least one instrumental swallowing examination within term of Clinical Fellowship.
  • Consult with and serve as a resource for physicians, nursing staff, and other clinicians to increase knowledge of therapy services.
  • Participate in departmental process improvement initiatives including daily huddles, department metrics and providing innovative ideas to improve process.
  • Meet departmental productivity standards and complete productivity logs in a timely manner.
  • Participate in quality and patient safety initiatives, engaging in excellent customer service practices, including but not limited to, following ICARE.
  • Actively participate in interdisciplinary meetings, departmental in-service activities, evidence based journal article review, and/or AAMC-funded continuing education courses.
  • Perform administrative tasks as needed including, but not limited to completing patient scheduling and predictive staffing matrix.
