The incumbent in this position is a staff therapist who participates in the evaluation and treatment of patients based upon current principles and practices of Speech Language Pathology. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and Children's Health philosophy, policies, procedures and standards.

  • Provide direct Speech Language Pathology evaluations and re-evaluations, including assessment of prior and current level of function, setting individualized goals and making discharge recommendations in accordance with standards of practice
  • Provide direct Speech Language Pathology treatments according to standards of practice, including patient and family education, progression of treatment plan and implementation of appropriate therapeutic interventions
  • Report on patient progress through appropriate written documentation including evaluation forms, progress notes, education forms
  • Collaborate with physicians, patients, family and other members of the health care team relative to patient treatment and progress as well as other affiliated agencies with regard to effective discharge planning
  • Coordinate and prioritize own schedule in relation to demands of patient treatment and other departmental responsibilities
  • Supervise rehabilitation aides
  • Mentor and instruct Speech Language Pathology interns and other students as indicated
  • Demonstrate proper use and maintenance of department equipment and supplies
  • Attend and participate in departmental meetings, in services, rounds and peer reviews
  • Participate in program development as assigned by Team Leader
  • Participate in continuing education programs or other opportunities for learning for continued professional competency
  • Ability to meet physical and non-physical demands as outlined in the job description
  • Assume other duties and responsibilities that are appropriate to the position and area
  • At least 1 year job related experience preferred
  • For Level II Speech Language Pathologists three years experience required
  • For Level I Speech Language Pathologist one year of experienced preferred
  • Graduate or advanced degree required
  • License to practice Speech Language Pathology in the state of Texas required
  • Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology from ASHA within two years from date of hire required
  • Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers from the American Heart Association required upon hire
  • Requires in-depth professional knowledge and practical/applied expertise in own discipline and basic knowledge of related disciplines within the broader professional field
  • Has knowledge of best practices and how own area integrates with others; demonstrates awareness of the industry, including regulatory, evolving customer demands, and the factors that differentiate the organization in the market
  • Acts as a resource for colleagues with less experience; may lead projects with manageable risks and resource requirements
  • Solves complex problems and takes a new perspective on existing solutions; exercises judgment based on the analysis of multiple sources of information
  • Impacts a range of customer, operational, project or service activities within own team and other related teams; works within broad guidelines and policies
  • Works independently, receives minimal guidance
  • Explains difficult or sensitive information; works to build consensus
  • Pediatric feeding and pediatric rehab experience preferred
