About The Position

A public elementary school district in Illinois is seeking a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) with American Sign Language (ASL) fluency to conduct a one-time student evaluation. The district serves deaf and hard of hearing students in inclusive educational settings and is committed to ensuring appropriate communication access and services. This short-term, in-person role focuses exclusively on completing a comprehensive communication evaluation for a single student.

Requirements

Valid Speech-Language Pathologist licensure.
Demonstrated fluency in American Sign Language (ASL).
Experience evaluating deaf or hard of hearing students.
Knowledge of functional communication assessments and IEP-related evaluation requirements.
Ability to conduct in-person evaluations during school hours (7:45 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.).
Ability to pass or provide a clean background check acceptable to the district.

Nice To Haves

Experience working with students who use cochlear implants.
Familiarity with educational interpreters and multimodal communication systems.
Prior experience completing short-term or contract-based school evaluations.

Responsibilities

Conduct a functional communication evaluation for a fifth-grade deaf student.
Assess the student’s use of American Sign Language for educational access.
Review existing IEP documentation, interpreter supports, and communication accommodations.
Evaluate communication methods used across school, home, and community environments.
Complete assessment activities in one or multiple sessions as appropriate.
Prepare and submit a written evaluation report to the district upon completion.
Coordinate with district staff to ensure evaluation timelines and compliance requirements are met.
