About The Position

To help students with special communicative needs to use the maximum communication possible. May supervise professional, paraprofessionals, and/or clerical staff.

Requirements

  • Valid NC SLP license required
  • Minimum educational level is a Master's degree
  • Board of Examiners' License in Speech/Language Pathology
  • Must be physically able to sit, stand, walk and drive a car.
  • Must be able to lift boxes up to 10 pounds.
  • Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural or composite characteristics (whether similar or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.
  • Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes giving instructions, assignments or directions to subordinates or assistants.
  • Requires the ability to read and write complex text and data.
  • Requires the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form; to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in or from standardized situations.
  • Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in Standard English.
  • Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas, to add, subtract, divide and multiply.
  • Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, with and shape.
  • Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using computers and other technology.
  • Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
  • Requires the ability to differentiate between colors or shades of color.
  • Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under average levels of stress.

Responsibilities

  • Organizes the local program, cooperates with others to accomplish goals.
  • Coordinates program services with other student services and maintains records in accordance with established rules, regulations, and ethical standards.
  • Conducts screening and testing, obtains diagnostic information, analyzes information and makes recommendations regarding program and services. The speech-language specialist supervises interns and other professionals, paraprofessionals and volunteers.
  • Develops individual education programs.
  • Plans therapy and uses appropriate diagnostic tools and therapy techniques. The speech-language specialist manages time, facilities and resources to facilitate delivery of services. The speech-language specialist promotes effective interpersonal relations and engages in continuing professional growth activities.
  • Provides consultation, seeks assistance of others, uses related research and makes recommendations and referrals in the implementation of services.
