About The Position

To work with Deaf/Hard of hearing students in the Regional Day School Program for the Deaf develop speech, language and listening skills to the highest degree possible, maximizing their abilities and residual hearing.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in speech pathology
  • State License for speech/language pathologist
  • Certificate of Clinical Competency-SLP-Preferred, CFY acceptable
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate
  • ability to communicate with Deaf/Hard of Hearing students via-sign language
  • Basic knowledge of Special Education
  • Experience or training with Deaf/Hard of hearing Students (or willing to learn)
  • Knowledge of hearing aids and F.M. amplification systems (or willing to learn)
  • Knowledge of Signing Exact English-Preferred (or willing to learn)
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate

Responsibilities

  • Provide a speech therapy program to meet individual needs of Deaf/Hard of hearing students enrolled in the RDSPD
  • Serve as a resource to school staff members in the development of a balanced program for oral communication and speech improvement
  • Serve as a resource to school staff members in the use of amplification equipment (hearing aids and F.M. systems)
  • Coordinate the distribution, return, repair and use of RDSPD amplification equipment, maintaining records of such disbursement, and ordering replacement parts as needed
  • Evaluate speech, speechreading, listening, language and signed language communication skills of RDSPD students in collaboration with diagnostician and teachers
  • Provide a thorough assessment and diagnosis of speech and language disorders
  • Assist in appropriate individualized programs of therapy to meet individual student needs and to correct existing speech or language impairment
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers, interpreters and other school staff members to promote speech, language and listening skills by providing suggestions for incorporating those skills in the student’s daily activities
  • Provide information and serve as consultant to teachers and school staff members on speech, language and listening skills
  • Maintain thorough ongoing records for each individual student receiving speech therapy services
  • Maintain confidentiality of students, testing, diagnostic status and personal problems
  • Assume other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Director of the Regional Day School Program for the Deaf
