About The Position

The Speech Language Pathologist, Per Diem position at NYU Langone Hospital-Long Island involves assessing, providing, and documenting speech language and dysphagia services to both inpatient and outpatient populations. The role requires evaluating and implementing individualized treatment plans tailored to meet the needs of patients across the age spectrum, while also participating in educational and research activities.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Speech Language Pathology.
  • Current and valid New York State License in Speech Language Pathology.
  • ASHA certification in Speech Language Pathology.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification.
  • 1 - 2 years of experience in a medically related environment with communication, cognition, assistive and augmentative communication disorders, and dysphagia.
  • 1 - 2 years of experience with Modified Barium Swallow Test (MBS) or Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing with Sensory Testing (FEEST) and ventilator-dependent patients.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written, along with counseling, customer service, problem-solving, planning, organization, and multitasking skills.
  • Ability to mentor and train graduate students in speech language pathology.
  • Specific clinical skills related to evaluating, testing, therapy, and counseling for those with speech/language, swallowing, and related disorders.
  • Intermediate computer skills including Microsoft Office, especially Word and Excel.

Nice To Haves

  • Adult medical ICU experience required.
  • NICU/pediatric experience preferred.
  • Weekend and holiday availability.

Responsibilities

  • Performs evaluations, re-evaluations, treatments, and client/family education for speech language, swallowing, and related disorders.
  • Administers and interprets specialized testing as required for both inpatient and outpatient populations.
  • Ensures completion of patient records and other documentation according to federal, state, and hospital standards and regulations.
  • Participates in patient care conferences, committees, orientation, community education projects, and in-service education.
  • Communicates with physicians and other health care providers to offer coordinated and comprehensive care.
  • Acts as a resource and advocate for those with communication and other related difficulties.
  • Keeps abreast of and uses current trends and research-based evidence in speech language pathology.
  • Maintains and continues to build upon professional competency through education and annual review.
  • Shares and conveys professional knowledge with hospital employees as appropriate.
  • Mentors graduate clinicians as per federal, state, ASHA, and university-specific guidelines.
  • Maintains a positive learning environment for students and provides teaching and constructive feedback.
  • Participates in and conducts research as approved by the hospital's Institutional Review Board (IRB) committee.
