About The Position

The Speech Pathologist Clinical Specialist evaluates and treats patients referred for speech, language, cognitive, and dysphagia dysfunction.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree or equivalent education in speech-language pathology.
  • 5 years of speech-language pathology experience.
  • Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech and Language Pathology (CCC-SLP) - American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluates and treats patients with neurogenic speech language/swallowing impairment; communicates findings to members of the Rehab team via participation in patient conferences and in written reports.
  • Recommends diets, and performs modified barium swallow studies/FEES when indicated.
  • Provides patients, families and caregivers with ongoing counseling regarding the nature of swallowing and communication disorders and their ramifications for functional performance.
  • Performs timely re-examinations and modifies goals and treatment interventions accordingly. Coordinates with other disciplines when indicated.
  • Participates in discharge planning, makes recommendations for continued occupational therapy and provides home exercise programs when appropriate.
  • Orders treatment materials as appropriate, maintaining cost effectiveness.
  • Institutes speech pathology inservice training programs for inter-disciplinary staff.
  • Attends all appropriate conferences, rounds, in-services and meetings.
  • Maintains accurate patient treatment and attendance statistics.
  • Participates in program development for Rehab unit and within the Speech department.
  • Maintains productivity expectations specific to each service.
  • Provides an in-service to the Rehabilitation Department annually.
  • Designs appropriate PI instrument and participates in performance improvement including analyze performance and participate in process improvement projects.
  • Participates in PI committee(s) as assigned by the Chief Speech Therapist or Therapy Manager
  • Serves as a Clinical Instructor and participates in student lecture series.
  • Attends a minimum of two conferences annually.
  • Participates in research as opportunities permit.
  • Serves as a resource for orienting and mentoring new hires/per diem
  • Serves as a resource for coverage and assists the Therapy Manager or Professional Practice Manager in operational planning.
  • Participates as a representative in interdepartmental meetings throughout the hospital.
  • Demonstrates leadership responsibility.
  • Primary mentor for new hire.
  • Assist in the process of interview of new applicants and coordinate orientation programs for new staff members.
  • Evaluate staff competency at hire and annually as directed by Chief Speech Language Pathologist.
  • Identify needs in program planning and facilitate program development.
  • Responsible for the coordination of SLP services provision and clinical care of the Inpatient / Outpatient services.
