About The Position

The Speech and Language Pathologist will join the district's dedicated Special Education team and serve as the DHH Teacher of Record and AAC consultant. They will provide specialized instruction, assessment, and support services to students with communication needs resulting from hearing loss and/or the use of augmentative and alternative communication systems. This position ensures compliance with IDEA, state, and district policies while fostering students' access to communication, language, and academic curriculum in both general and special education settings.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Speech/Language Pathology from an accredited program
  • IPLA Speech/Language Pathologist License
  • Valid Indiana Communication Disorder License
  • Valid Indiana Deaf & Hard of Hearing License, or willingness to obtain
  • Displays excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills
  • Experience working with AAC devices in a school setting
  • Demonstrated ability to support staff in understanding second language acquisition, language development, and best practices for teaching culturally and linguistically diverse students
  • Willingness to remain current in field of special education and speech/language evaluations
  • In-depth knowledge of IDEA, Article 7, and IEP development processes, or willingness to pursue training
  • Displays dependability and punctuality

Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive speech, language, and communication assessments for students referred through the special education process
  • Evaluate areas such as articulation, phonology, fluency, voice, language comprehension and expression, and social communication
  • Administer and interpret audiological, speech, language, and AAC assessments to guide eligibility and programming decisions
  • Evaluate students for potential AAC support needs and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams for device trials and selection
  • Participate in multidisciplinary evaluation teams and contribute to eligibility determinations for special education services
  • Prepare detailed evaluation reports and share findings with staff and families
  • Develop and implement individualized treatment plans aligned with each student's Individualized Education Program (IEP)
  • Provide direct and indirect therapy to address identified speech and language goals
  • Utilize evidence-based practices to improve communication, literacy, and classroom participation
  • Adapt and modify therapy techniques to meet diverse student needs, including those with autism, developmental delays, or hearing impairments
  • Integrate augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems as needed
  • Collaborate with teachers, occupational therapists, physical therapists, school psychologists, and counselors to support students' academic and functional goals
  • Train staff on communication strategies, use of amplification systems (e.g., FM/DM systems), and AAC device programming
  • Partner with audiologists, technology specialists, and manufacturers regarding device maintenance and troubleshooting
  • Participate in multidisciplinary teams (audiologists, educational interpreters, occupational therapists, physical therapists, psychologists, etc.) to ensure coordinated services
  • Communicate regularly with families to share progress and recommend home carryover strategies
  • Participate in IEP meetings, parent conferences, and student support team meetings
  • Participate in professional development activities, workshops, and continuing education to stay current with best practices in speech-language pathology
  • Supervise graduate student interns or clinical fellows (if applicable)
  • Contribute to school initiatives and serve as a communication resource for staff and administration
  • Complete Medicaid billing documentation
  • Other duties as assigned
