About The Position

The SPED Inclusion Teacher Assistant position at Dallas Independent School District is designed to support teachers in providing inclusive education for students with disabilities in grades 9-12. The role involves assisting with instructional materials, maintaining classroom order, and providing personal care to students with physical needs. The assistant will work closely with individual students and small groups to help them develop motor skills and manage behavior, ensuring a supportive learning environment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Paraprofessional Certification required from State Board of Certification.
  • Bilingual in Spanish preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with children with disabilities.
  • Demonstrated general knowledge of child growth/development and behavior characteristics.
  • Effective communication skills in both oral and written form.
  • Demonstrated organizational and interpersonal skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Successful completion of a specific training program for teacher assistants or six months of relevant work experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated flexibility to cope with challenges in a rapidly changing environment.

Responsibilities

  • Help teacher prepare instructional materials and classroom displays.
  • Help maintain a neat and orderly classroom according to student needs.
  • Assist with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment.
  • Help teacher keep administrative records and prepare required reports.
  • Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
  • Assist students with physical disabilities according to their needs, including transferring to and from wheelchairs, lifting, or positioning.
  • Assist students with personal care, including feeding, bathroom needs, and hygiene.
  • Assist with classroom curriculum and instructional exercises assigned by the teacher.
  • Help manage behavior of students, including intervening in crisis situations and restraining disruptive behavior as needed.
  • Supervise students throughout the school day, including lunchroom, bus, and playground duty.
  • Keep teacher informed of special needs or problems of individual students.
  • Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned.
