About the position

The Specimen Processing Line Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the workflow in the Specimen Processing department, ensuring that all tasks are completed accurately and on time. This role involves providing guidance and support to Lab Aides, maintaining quality staffing through hiring and training, and addressing departmental issues effectively. The supervisor plays a crucial role in the management of specimen processing, contributing to the overall efficiency and quality of patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Schedules and maintains adequate workflow coverage in all areas of Specimen Processing.
  • Provides guidance and support to Lab Aides.
  • Ensures that all tasks are completed within the appropriate timeframe.
  • Communicates department problems or matters that need attention to the appropriate personnel and assists in providing possible solutions.
  • Maintains quality staffing by interviewing, hiring, training, and providing staff development through performance evaluation and corrective counseling.
  • Opens and inspects all specimens to assure an accurate specimen count.
  • Verifies requisitions and specimen containers for completeness of patient and client information.
  • Follows proper procedures with specimen rejection if the submitted information is incorrect.
  • Produces and correctly affixes labels to specimen containers and requisitions.
  • Scans accessioned and grossed specimen requisitions accurately and timely.
  • Operates and maintains laboratory equipment and tracks all routine maintenance performed.
  • Accurately operates the laser slide etcher and organizes the etched slides for Microtomy.
  • Stains, coverslips, and distributes slides to appropriate departments for further processing.
  • Prints, sorts, and packages patient reports for delivery.
  • Files and retrieves blocks and slides in accordance with State and Federal guidelines.
  • Identifies problems that may affect test performance or reporting of test results and resolves or immediately reports to Laboratory Manager or Managing Director.
  • Ensures that all daily tasks are completed, scheduling or performing overtime as needed.
  • Monitors laboratory supplies stock and notifies the person in charge of ordering when supplies are needed.
  • Approves and schedules all scheduled days off in accordance with laboratory procedures.
  • Conducts annual performance appraisal of lab assistant/associate personnel.
  • Maintains and records all time in Kronos.
  • Operates, cleans, and sterilizes laboratory equipment, glassware, and instruments.
  • Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information concerning patients, physicians, employees, clients, vendors, and the Company.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
  • Complies with all State, Federal, professional regulations as well as department rules, policies, and procedural manuals.
  • Adheres to Safety Regulations and HIPAA Regulations.

Requirements

  • 1 year as a Lab Assistant or Lab Associate (required).
  • 1 year as a Histology Lead or Supervisor (preferred).
  • Associates Degree or High School Diploma or Equivalent (required).
  • Knowledge of Laboratory Information System and laboratory techniques to perform routine laboratory tests.
  • Knowledge and skill of laboratory equipment and testing to operate, clean, and sterilize instruments.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Ability to operate copier, printer, and fax machine.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a supervisory role within a laboratory setting.
  • Familiarity with laboratory safety regulations and compliance.
