About The Position

The Specimen Management Technician in Surgical Pathology at UVA Medical Center is responsible for receiving and processing laboratory requests and specimens for analysis. This role involves entering requests into the laboratory computer system, transporting specimens, and utilizing problem-solving skills to address any issues that arise. The technician also serves as a trainer for new staff and healthcare professional students, ensuring compliance with quality and safety standards.

Requirements

• High School Graduate or Equivalent
• No prior experience required
• No licensure required

Responsibilities

• Receive and process requests and specimens for laboratory analysis.
• Enter written and electronic orders for laboratory requests into the laboratory computer system.
• Ensure all specimens received meet specimen acceptance criteria.
• Operate the Pneumatic Tube System (PTS).
• Investigate, document, and resolve problems or complaints related to specimens.
• Process laboratory specimens efficiently.
• Serve as a trainer and role model for new Specimen Management Technicians and healthcare professional students.
• Demonstrate knowledge of quality, safety, and compliance programs.
• Perform area-specific support activities as needed.
