About The Position

The Specialty Team Lead is responsible for guiding and supporting the daily operations of the Specialty Team within the Special Accounts department. This role ensures compliance with credit union policies and regulatory requirements while maintaining high service standards. The Specialty Team Lead provides leadership in workflow coordination, problem resolution, and staff development, and serves as a subject matter expert on complex member account situations. This position plays a key role in protecting the credit union’s assets and fostering a positive, productive team environment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required. Additional coursework or certifications in finance, collections, or leadership preferred.
  • In-depth understanding of collections procedures, lending practices, and depository account management.
  • Strong knowledge of legal aspects of collections, including bankruptcy, repossession, and regulatory compliance.
  • Familiarity with federal and state regulations such as FDCPA, FCRA, UDAAP, and SCRA.
  • Minimum of 8 years of high-volume collections experience.
  • At least 5 years of supervisory or team leadership experience managing a team of 5 or more employees.
  • Proven experience handling escalated member situations and complex account issues.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and ability to navigate multiple systems simultaneously.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to perform financial calculations and interpret budget analysis.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Team Leadership & Workflow Oversight
  • Monitor team performance, productivity, and service quality; provide coaching and feedback to improve outcomes.
  • Coordinate daily workflow and ensure adequate staffing coverage through schedule management.
  • Act as a resource for team members, offering guidance on complex cases and procedural questions.
  • Train new and existing staff on systems, procedures, and departmental efficiencies.
  • Identify process gaps and recommend improvements to department management.
  • Member & Vendor Support
  • Handle escalated member situations with professionalism and empathy, ensuring resolution aligns with credit union policies.
  • Approve specialty exceptions and escalations within established authority limits.
  • Serve as a liaison between internal departments and external vendors to resolve account issues.
  • Compliance & Risk Management
  • Ensure all specialty account functions comply with federal, state, and credit union regulations, including BSA, OFAC, FDCPA, SCRA, UDAAP, and others.
  • Apply knowledge of lending, collections, bankruptcy, and repossession laws to assess account validity and risk.
  • Follow the Right of Offset clause and other recovery tools to protect credit union assets.
  • Operational Support
  • Assist with legal and recovery functions, ensuring adherence to policies and legal standards.
  • Perform miscellaneous collections functions and provide backup support for specialty team roles as needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality in all credit union and member matters.
  • Model and promote a positive, collaborative team culture.
