Under the direction of a pharmacist, the Sepcialty Pharmacy Technician Certified performs prescription order entry and filling of specialty and infusion prescriptions. Manages ongoing specialty patient caseloads using organizational and follow up skills. Communicates and follows up with patients, referral sources and payers. Obtains insurance authorization as required. Prepares sterile medications using aseptic technique. Utilizes the pharmacy computer system. Maintains accurate documentation records. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Performs job duties under the direction of the pharmacist. Assists the Pharmacist in filling prescription items, as permitted by the State Board of Pharmacy. Effectively communicates with multiple professional disciplines, patients and third party payers as required. Consistently notifies patient and physician office staff of prescription status in a timely manner. Demonstrates the ability to analyze available facts and develop sound, effective problem-solving based on that information; ability to resolve issues in a timely, efficient and effective manner. Directs all pertinent information and all medication-related questions to a pharmacist. Functions well under pressure and/or high stress situations. Accurately completes order entry, labeling and facilitates the preparation and dispensing of medications. Fills medications from computer-generated labels. Compounds medications following prescriptions issued by physicians or other authorized practitioners Demonstrates competence relating to pharmaceuticals in the setup and preparation of intravenous products and therapy services. Labels products appropriately, including cautionary or auxiliary labels. Sanitizes IV room, equipment and hood. Takes inventory, places orders, checks in drugs and supplies, stocks shelves and removes out-of-date items from the inventory. Maintains adequate supply of drugs, supplies and other pharmaceutical stock OTHER FUNCTIONS: Other related duties as assigned.
