About The Position

The Specialty Laboratory Technologist - Blood Bank position at Mount Sinai West involves performing routine and emergency analytical test procedures on all specimens submitted to the Blood Bank. The role includes preparing reagents for analytical tests according to designated procedures and ensuring the accuracy and safety of blood transfusions through various testing and analysis methods.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • One year Blood Bank Technologist experience preferred.
  • Six months clinical training program acceptable.
  • NYS Clinical Laboratory Technologist license required.
  • ASCP Certification required.
  • Microsoft Office - Beginner level.

Responsibilities

  • Performs, observes, interprets, and records a variety of immuno-hematological tests and procedures on both donor and recipient blood samples.
  • Prepares and dispenses blood components for transfusion.
  • Updates and maintains computerized records of all transactions, answers queries, and communicates with clinicians.
  • Assures adequate updated inventories of blood components and supplies.
  • Reviews the work of Technicians when a Supervisor is not present.
  • Performs ABO grouping, Rh typing, antibody detection, and compatibility tests on donor and recipient blood samples.
  • Performs and interprets results of pre-transfusion tests accurately and consistently.
  • Performs and interprets antibody identification studies of patients with positive antibody detection tests.
  • Utilizes special techniques and procedures to identify multiple specificities.
  • Performs and interprets blood group antigen tests to select antigen-negative red blood cell products for transfusion.
  • Performs and interprets direct antiglobulin tests.
  • Performs Elution Studies to determine specificity of immunoglobulins on red cell surface.
  • Evaluates cases to determine immunological basis for hemolytic anemias and/or delayed hemolytic reactions.
  • Performs and interprets prenatal tests to identify mothers at risk for Rh sensitization.
  • Interprets results of prenatal and cord blood studies.
  • Performs fetal blood screening tests to detect large fetal-maternal transplacental hemorrhage.
  • Interprets results of fetal acid elution tests for dosage adjustment of Rh-immune globulin.
  • Performs serological tests and clerical checks to evaluate transfusion reactions.
  • Records accurately all tests and transactions in the blood bank computer system.
  • Maintains adequate inventory of blood components and supplies during tour of duty.
  • Performs and records Quality Control Tests on blood bank reagents and equipment.
  • Cleans and disinfects benches and equipment according to infection control guidelines.
  • Understands thoroughly the guidelines and standards of all five regulating agencies.
  • Remains familiar with laboratory safety practices.
  • Meets criteria for competency assessment in all areas.
  • Takes specimens and performs analysis in other St. Luke's-Roosevelt laboratories if required.
