About The Position

COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS PARKS AND RECREATION SERVICE AREA POSITION TITLE: Specialty Class Instructor Non-seasonal, part-time, no benefits. Weekdays, evenings, Saturdays, Sundays REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: POSITION REPORTS TO: Aquatic Manager POSITION PURPOSE: Responsible for educating and training both staff and community members in various specialty courses including lifeguard training, water safety instruction, first aid, emergency water safety, and CPR. Incorporates American Red Cross programs and procedures into class sessions. Enforces established safety regulations and maintains positive relations with customers. NATURE AND SCOPE: This position requires the ability to teach and demonstrate effective first aid safety and life saving techniques. A strong background and knowledge of the specialty area is required to successfully execute this position as well as skill in relating to students and staff members in a professional and caring manner.

Requirements

  • Current ICT (Instructor Candidate Training).
  • Current instructor certification in specialty area.
  • Current standard certification in specialty area.
  • Approved Criminal Background Investigation if over 18 years of age.
  • Thorough knowledge of specialty area.
  • Understanding of Center operations, policies, and programs.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Good teaching skills.
  • Ability to relate well and communicate with others.
  • Strong planning and organization skills.
  • Strong swimming ability (for Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructors).
  • Tact and problem solving skills.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for effectively instructing safety specialty courses.
  • Prepares, plans, and organizes coursework.
  • Demonstrates skills and observes and corrects errors.
  • Incorporates American Red Cross program standards in class sessions.
  • Follows all instructor policies as cited in the Center handbook.
  • Performs administrative duties including documenting student performance, preparing records, and issuing course certification cards, administering evaluation surveys at the close of each class.
  • Enforces established safety regulations.
  • Assumes responsibility for establishing and maintaining positive relations with patrons.
  • Assists and supports class participants in a productive manner.
  • Maintains a positive rapport with patrons.
  • Responds to questions and problems quickly and courteously.
  • Assumes responsibility for establishing and maintaining effective working relations with Center personnel and with management.
  • Assists Center staff as needed.
  • Keeps management informed of area activities and of any significant concerns.
  • Attends meetings as required.
  • Uses staff feedback effectively to make improvements in instruction.
  • Assumes responsibility for other duties as assigned.
  • Keeps work area clean and well maintained.
  • Continues education in specialty area.
