About The Position

The Specialized Day Camp Coordinator provides leadership and oversight for Camp Elevate, a YMCA summer day camp designed for children ages 5–12 with low support needs who benefit from a structured, supportive camp environment. This position manages the daily operations of the program including staff supervision, activity planning, safety oversight, and family communication. The coordinator ensures the camp environment supports social development, confidence building, and inclusion while maintaining YMCA standards for youth development.

Requirements

  • Minimum two years experience working with youth ages 5–12.
  • Experience working with children with low support needs, developmental differences, or behavioral support needs in educational, camp, recreational, or youth development settings.
  • Strong leadership, organization, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage staff and maintain a structured program environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Background in youth development, recreation, education, psychology, or special education.
  • Experience supervising youth program staff.
  • CPR/First Aid certification or willingness to obtain.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and implement a structured daily camp schedule including recreational, educational, and social development activities.
  • Ensure activities are adaptable for youth with low support needs.
  • Maintain an engaging environment that promotes confidence, teamwork, and independence.
  • Ensure YMCA youth development standards are upheld.
  • Supervise camp counselors and support staff.
  • Conduct daily staff huddles and provide clear expectations.
  • Provide coaching and guidance on working with youth with behavioral or developmental support needs.
  • Support children who may need additional guidance with transitions, routines, or social interactions.
  • Implement positive behavior strategies and encourage emotional regulation.
  • Maintain appropriate camper-to-staff ratios and ensure proper supervision at all times.
  • Serve as the primary contact for parents and guardians.
  • Communicate camper progress, concerns, and successes with families.
  • Foster a welcoming and supportive environment for families.
  • Maintain attendance records, incident reports, and documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with YMCA, DHR, and safety guidelines.
  • Coordinate supplies, equipment, and program logistics.
