Overview In an automotive OEM environment, a Time Slot Steering Specialist plays a critical role in controlling, scheduling, and steering all inbound trucks delivering materials to the plant. This role ensures that all carriers adhere to their assigned delivery windows, preventing congestion, dock bottlenecks, and disruptions that could impact Just‑in‑Time (JIT) production. By managing time slots, coordinating dock assignments, and monitoring carrier performance in real time, this specialist supports smooth logistics operations and protects the assembly and body shop from material shortages. Requirements

  • Automotive Logistics Knowledge – Experience with inbound logistics, JIT, JIS, dock scheduling, and truck flow management in an OEM environment.
  • Real-Time Decision Making – Ability to quickly adjust schedules and react to disruptions in a fast-paced production environment.
  • Communication & Coordination Skills – Strong ability to collaborate with carriers, suppliers, receiving docks, and leadership teams.
  • Technical Competence – Skilled in TMS, YMS, ERP systems (SAP, Oracle), and carrier scheduling platforms.
  • Analytical Thinking – Able to interpret data, track KPIs, and identify improvement opportunities.
  • High Pressure Tolerance – Capable of making rapid decisions during time-sensitive logistics situations that could impact production.
  • Minimum of High School Diploma, GED or equivalent required for all roles at Scout Motors, Inc.

Responsibilities

  • Time Slot Management & Inbound Scheduling
  • Truck Appointment Scheduling
  • Manage and control time slots for all inbound trucks through TMS or OEM scheduling portals.
  • Ensure carrier appointment schedules align with plant capacity, dock availability, and production demand.
  • Real-Time Slot Steering
  • Steer carriers into optimal arrival windows based on daily logistics volume, road conditions, and plant constraints.
  • Adjust or reassign time slots dynamically to prevent congestion or delays at the truck control center.
  • Daily Inbound Flow Optimization
  • Maintain a balanced flow of trucks by staggering high‑volume deliveries and prioritizing critical-part shipments.
  • Coordinate with in‑house logistics, receiving docks, and yard management teams to match truck arrivals with unloading capacity.
  • Carrier & Supplier Coordination
  • Carrier Communication
  • Serve as the primary communication point for carriers regarding time-slot assignment, arrival instructions, delays, and contingencies.
  • Enforce compliance with scheduling rules and plant arrival procedures.
  • Supplier Interface
  • Collaborate with suppliers to ensure shipments are dispatched on time to meet scheduled delivery windows.
  • Address issues related to late dispatches, missed appointments, or incomplete shipment documentation.
  • Performance Oversight
  • Track punctuality, carrier reliability, and adherence to delivery schedules.
  • Escalate recurring non‑compliance issues to procurement, material planning, or logistics leadership.
  • Monitoring, Tracking & Truck Flow Control
  • Real-Time Tracking
  • Monitor inbound freight status using TMS, telematics, GPS data, yard-management systems, and carrier updates.
  • Provide real-time visibility to internal logistics teams, warehouse leaders, and production planners.
  • Dock & Yard Coordination
  • Coordinate dock assignments with receiving teams based on load type, part criticality, and available manpower.
  • Communicate detailed arrival times to yard jockeys, ensuring smooth flow between gate entry, staging, and docks.
  • Exception Handling
  • Quickly react to delays, early arrivals, overbooked time slots, or unexpected volume spikes.
  • Develop and execute rapid-response adjustments to avoid unloading bottlenecks.
  • Problem Resolution & Risk Management
  • Disruption Response
  • Respond immediately to logistics disruptions such as traffic delays, carrier breakdowns, weather issues, or misrouted trucks.
  • Redirect or prioritize trucks as needed to protect JIT production.
  • Critical Load Recovery
  • Arrange expedited unloading, dock priority, or alternate routing for trucks carrying critical JIT/JIS materials.
  • Implement contingency plans to prevent production downtime.
  • Root Cause Analysis
  • Analyze the causes of missed slots, late arrivals, and yard congestion.
  • Work with logistics partners and internal teams to develop corrective and preventive actions.
  • Cost Optimization & Continuous Improvement
  • Efficiency Improvements
  • Identify opportunities to reduce truck wait times, minimize overtime at docks, and eliminate process bottlenecks.
  • Support Lean logistics initiatives by improving material flow and time-slot utilization.
  • Cost Control
  • Monitor detention time, demurrage charges, and overtime caused by inefficient scheduling.
  • Recommend improvements that reduce inbound transportation costs and yard-management expenses.
  • Data-Driven Improvements
  • Use KPIs (arrival reliability, dock turnaround time, slot utilization) to drive process enhancements.

  • Regulatory Compliance
  • Ensure all inbound truck operations adhere to plant safety rules, OSHA guidelines, and OEM logistics standards.
  • Documentation Accuracy
  • Maintain accurate logs of truck arrivals, delays, cancellations, rescheduled appointments, and dock utilization data.
  • Support audits and reporting required by internal logistics and compliance teams.
  • Standardized Processes
  • Ensure all carriers follow gate-entry procedures, documentation requirements, and routing instructions.

  • This is a full-time, exempt position eligible to receive a base salary and to participate in an annual performance bonus program. Final salary offered will be determined based on factors including but not limited to the candidate's skills and experience. The annual performance bonus program is preset and not candidate dependent.
