L3Harris is seeking a Specialist, Tool Design Engineer to join our team at our growing AMF facility in Huntsville, AL. Tool engineers are responsible to define manual and semi-automated tooling such as jigs, fixtures, molds, mandrels, and lifting devices required in the fabrication and assembly of solid fuel rocket motors. The role of a Tool Engineer is a mixture of design, structural analysis, project management, and hands-on manufacturing.

  • Working with cross-functional teams to define tool requirements.
  • Designing using PTC Creo and Windchill in accordance with principles of Design for Manufacturability.
  • Conducting design reviews with cross-functional teams to obtain approval of tool designs.
  • Overseeing procurement/fabrication of tooling.
  • Working with manufacturing engineers to perform functional evaluations and acceptance of the tooling.
  • Performing liaison support for tool maintenance by identifying tool problems, designing repairs, and implementing modifications.
  • Using finite element analysis (FEA) methods and tools to perform structural analysis of tools to predict internal stresses and resolve structural instabilities.
  • Applying GD&T and complex system tolerance analysis.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to obtain a US security clearance.
  • Bachelor's Degree with a minimum of 4 years of prior mechanical engineering design experience; or a Graduate Degree, and a minimum of 2 years prior mechanical engineering design experience; or in lieu of a degree, a minimum of 8 years of prior mechanical engineering design experience.
  • 2 years of prior experience specifically in design of tooling, ground support equipment, or special test equipment.
  • Experience with Siemens NX is preferred.
  • Experience with ANSYS is preferred.
  • Fabrication experience is preferred.
  • Composite Wind tool design and/or fabrication experience is preferred.
  • Compression Mold tool design and/or fabrication experience is preferred.
  • Experience working in the defense industry is desired.
  • Active US Secret Clearance is desired.
