About The Position

Pagosa Springs Medical Center (PSMC) is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Life Safety Specialist to lead and manage our Life Safety Program. This role ensures compliance with NFPA (99, 101), CDPHE, and other regulatory standards, while maintaining a constant state of readiness for accreditation surveys. The Life Safety Specialist serves as the organization’s subject matter expert on fire safety, emergency preparedness, inspections, and life safety systems, working collaboratively across departments to protect patients, staff, and visitors. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science, Occupational Health & Safety, or related field strongly preferred
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience in life safety, fire protection, or healthcare facilities management required
  • Healthcare-focused life safety experience strongly preferred
  • Experience with:
  • NFPA codes and regulatory standards
  • Fire inspections and safety compliance
  • Emergency Command System (ICS)
  • Experience supporting CMS, Joint Commission, or state surveys strongly preferred
  • Construction life safety or ILSM experience preferred
  • Current AHA BLS (Heartsaver) certification
  • Strong knowledge of life safety codes and healthcare compliance
  • Excellent organizational and documentation management skills
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to lead audits, inspections, and program initiatives
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and data tracking tools
  • Hospital and facilities environment with indoor and outdoor work
  • Exposure to equipment, ladders, tools, and mechanical systems
  • Exposure to environmental hazards including weather, chemicals, and electrical systems
  • Moderate to high noise levels with frequent interruptions

  • NICET Level II or higher (Fire Alarm or Water-Based Systems)

Responsibilities

  • Life Safety Program Leadership
  • Develop, implement, and manage the organization-wide Life Safety Program
  • Ensure ongoing compliance with NFPA codes, CDPHE, CMS, and applicable regulations
  • Maintain a constant state of readiness for surveys and inspections
  • Regulatory Compliance
  • Interpret and enforce NFPA 101 (Life Safety Code) and related standards
  • Ensure facility compliance with fire codes and safety regulations
  • Maintain audit-ready documentation and compliance records
  • Collaborate with Compliance and QAPI on risk assessments and corrective actions
  • Inspections & Audits
  • Coordinate and track inspections for:
  • Fire alarm systems
  • Sprinkler and suppression systems
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Egress routes and fire barriers
  • Conduct internal Environment of Care (EOC) and Life Safety audits
  • Maintain accurate records to ensure continuous survey readiness
  • Emergency Preparedness
  • Develop and maintain emergency response and evacuation plans
  • Coordinate and lead emergency drills and exercises
  • Evaluate performance and provide feedback for improvement
  • Construction & ILSM Oversight
  • Provide life safety oversight for construction and renovation projects
  • Review plans and drawings for compliance with life safety standards
  • Implement and monitor Interim Life Safety Measures (ILSM)
  • Conduct above-ceiling inspections for fire-rated assemblies
  • Incident Investigation
  • Investigate fire alarms, safety events, and near misses
  • Identify root causes and implement corrective actions
  • Collaborate with Facilities and leadership on safety improvements
  • Training & Education
  • Educate staff and contractors on safety policies and emergency procedures
  • Provide training related to fire safety, hazardous materials, and life safety systems
  • Support organizational competency and preparedness
