About The Position

The HIMS Specialist should have a knowledge of an electronic health record (EHR), Epic preferred, and a basic understanding of medical terminology. The HIMS Specialist is primarily responsible for review of patient records in electronic health record and obtaining records in preparation for upcoming appointments; as this role is highly focused on ensuring the record is up to date, accurate and all records are present for appointments. The HIMS Specialist is a self-starter, comfortable with change, with the ability to multi-task, think critically, and be resourceful while staying on task. The HIMS specialist should be knowledgeable in various software programs with the ability to learn new programs as needed. Must possess excellent communication skills both written and verbal to ensure excellence when working with patients and their clinical teams. The HIMS Specialist is expected to handle incoming and outgoing calls, electronic faxes, shared inboxes, and monitoring daily work queues. The HIMS Specialist may help train new or contract staff and students in a qualitative and effective manner. Analyzes patient information to ensure compliance with standards established by Federal/State & Joint Commission & CMS regulations. Coordinates with clinicians to ensure documentation contains all required elements and is completed in a timely manner. Adheres to institutional policies regarding health care documentation. Utilizes independent analytical and critical thinking skills. Works independently and collaboratively across the enterprise with minimal supervision. Adheres to guidelines with regard to accessing minimum necessary information to complete job function. Adheres to state and federal rules regarding privacy and confidentiality of protected health information. Leverages technology to serve the patients and practice. Professionally communicates through all electronic, written, and verbal methods. Ensures great customer service while assisting patients, care providers, allied health staff, attorneys, insurance companies, government audits, and others in a courteous, professional and confidential manner.

Requirements

  • Associate of Science degree in a healthcare related discipline required.
  • Associate of Science degree in Health Information Technology preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical records format and content.
  • Ability to perform work in a fast-paced, constant change, production environment with a focus on quality.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and professionally verbally and in written forms.
  • Demonstrated ability to maneuver in multi-technology environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, and Outlook) applications.
  • Keyboarding skills necessary, with intermediate typing/keyboard/computer skills.
  • Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) preferred.
