Union HVAC Technician – JLL What this job involves: As an HVAC/Refrigeration Technician Grade 1 with JLL, you'll be responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing critical building systems that ensure optimal comfort and operational efficiency for our clients. This hands-on role requires expertise in pneumatic, electric, and electronic controls across large-scale HVAC and refrigeration systems. You'll work independently using technical drawings and manuals to diagnose complex equipment issues, perform system installations, and execute major equipment start-ups including large chiller systems. This position is essential to JLL's commitment to delivering exceptional facility management services and maintaining the highest standards of building performance. This position operates under the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE Local 99).

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Completion of 4-year apprenticeship program and/or equivalent hands-on experience
  • CFC certification for refrigerant handling
  • Proven experience with large compressor operations and pressure/temperature relationships
  • Expertise in refrigerant systems, recovery procedures, and charging protocols
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, schematics, and service manuals
  • Must own complete set of hand tools necessary for the trade

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of pneumatic controls, instruments, and automatic dampers
  • Experience with air flow management and air balancing in large institutional settings
  • Familiarity with water and steam systems operations
  • Working knowledge of building automation systems and DDC controls
  • Kitchen equipment maintenance and repair experience
  • Proficiency in soldering techniques (silver solder and soft solder)
  • Understanding of federal, state, and local codes applicable to HVAC/refrigeration work

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot and repair pneumatic, electric, and electronic controls using proper testing equipment and technical documentation
  • Diagnose and repair HVAC electrical components on chillers, rooftop units, fan units, and related equipment
  • Perform complete charging and start-up procedures for large chiller systems
  • Repair and rebuild pumps, compressors, and other mechanical components
  • Service residential and commercial refrigeration systems, including refrigerant recovery, charging, and system diagnostics
  • Troubleshoot and repair ice machines and kitchen equipment as needed
  • Utilize building automation systems (BAS) to diagnose and resolve control issues
