About The Position

Asian Family Engagement Specialist Works to engage families, educators, community partners and school administrators to systemically improve family engagement across the district to ensure inclusion and partnership of the Asian community. Ensures multicultural and multilingual communication and outreach support is coordinated with families, schools and departments to build stronger links with DPS families who are part of the Asian and/or Pacific Islander diaspora. Helps schools and departments to develop their capacity on family engagement as a strategy for academic achievement, social emotional learning and inclusion to foster student academic achievement and success. Involves building capacity with school & department staff on interacting with families of diverse backgrounds to foster partnership and two way communication email, phone, text, and face-to-face. Provides support for the coordination of meaningful, engagement opportunities and strategies, including but not limited to school-based family engagement opportunities such as, family/parent teacher conferences, academic nights, communications and recognitions/celebrations. Works as a key member of the FACE team in collaboration with the district, and school leadership and Asian community. Supports other initiatives and family engagement opportunities ensuring family engagement is a strategy that includes DPS Asian families.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or relevant work experience required
  • 3 or more years of experience partnering with Asian communities
  • Background working in a K-12 education system is preferred
  • Must have a valid Colorado driver's license, meet the District's insurability requirements, and have an acceptable driving record for the past three years
  • Willingness to operate and be certified to drive a 15 passenger van.
  • Proficiency with Google Suite and Gmail, including Docs, Sheets, and Slides.
  • Effective time management and organizational skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • High degree of integrity in handling confidential information
  • Displays cultural competency working with Asian families across the diaspora
  • Ability to attend evening and weekend obligations
  • Lead for racial and educational excellence and work to dismantle systems of oppression and inequity in our community, along with believing in and supporting all students so they feel seen and heard with access to high quality education.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Sociology, Social Sciences, or related field preferred
  • Bilingual (Consent Decree Language/Nepali/Vietnamese/Dari/Arabic) preferred

Responsibilities

  • Serves as a liaison to various councils and committees to provide logistical support and communication between the District and Asian Communities
  • Works with schools and districts to build their capacity to partner with Asian families and communities to strengthen family engagement as a strategy across all District educational goals.
  • Strategizes and executes the vision of current and ongoing family engagement work and supports the FACE department’s goals tied to the district’s priorities; provides thought partnership and consultation to educators and leaders at schools and internal DPS departments in developing culturally effective communication and engagement plans ensuring partnership with Asian families.
  • Collaborates with immigrant groups, faith-based organizations, refugee-serving agencies, consular offices, and other non-profits to inform families/parents about programs and services and increase parent/family capacity and knowledge of DPS systems and opportunities to partner.
  • Supports creation and revision (as necessary) of tool-kits, resources, and templates for family engagement promising practices; provides thought partnership and consulting to FACE department teams regarding their work with Asian families and community.
  • Designs, gathers, and updates systems for meaningful family engagement, tracking family engagement dashboards across the district, seeing its alignment to academic achievement, monitoring in connection to the work; collaborates between divisions to evaluate, reassess, and respond to data with the support of district teams.
  • Supports communications, as needed, which may include grant writing, copywriting for internal or external newsletters, designing information materials, and identifying and recognizing outstanding family and community achievements with written and video stories
