About The Position

Under direction of the department chief, nurse leader or designee, this registered professional nurse position provides practice management support as well as initiating and/or assisting in the provision of direct patient care to patients, according to established guidelines. The Special Procedure nurse performs a variety of complex tasks which may include assisting in the provision of direct patient care to patients undergoing care in a procedural unit. Delivers specialty specific and/or ambulatory care including pre- and post-procedure assessment and monitoring; IV moderate sedation, chemotherapy, and intra-procedural care; for example, and not limited to: GYN Surgery, OMFS (Oral Maximus Facial Surgery) Oncology and GI procedure patients. Provides telephone triage and clinical advice appropriately; coordinates the follow-up care of patients; practice management support and patient education. Proficiency will be needed for the following; IV placement, preparation and administration of IV medication, IM injections, catheterizations, ACLS, BCLS. Attainment of privileges for IV moderate sedation as required by specialty.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a state approved school of nursing.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
  • Current license to practice professional nursing in Massachusetts.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification may be required based on specialty.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in medical/surgical or ambulatory nursing.

  • Experience with an electronic medical records system, EPIC preferred.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to interpret clinical information and develop care plans.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and multitask in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide practice management support and assist in direct patient care.
  • Perform pre- and post-procedure assessments and monitoring.
  • Administer IV moderate sedation, chemotherapy, and intra-procedural care.
  • Provide telephone triage and clinical advice.
  • Coordinate follow-up care for patients.
  • Educate patients regarding their care.
  • Maintain proficiency in IV placement and administration of medications.
  • Participate in IVMS seminar every two years.
