About The Position

The Library Assistant is responsible for the routine operations of the Library's central circulation and shelving activities under the supervision of the Supervisor of Circulation and Shelving. This role includes supervising and training library assistants and aides, ensuring the efficient operation of circulation and shelving activities, and maintaining an orderly library atmosphere.

Requirements

  • High School Graduate or equivalent; some additional education is desirable.
  • At least two (2) years of library or related experience.
  • Experience with automated systems related to job functions.
  • Proficiency with MS Word and Excel.
  • Ability to execute library policy and plan/supervise the work of others.
  • Demonstrates initiative and independent decision-making skills.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to present ideas clearly.
  • Ability to collaborate with library staff and external partners.
  • Ability to solve problems related to sorting, storage, and retrieval of materials.
  • Familiarity with the Library of Congress classification system and Boston Public Library classification system.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail.

Responsibilities

  • Assumes responsibility for the day-to-day operations of the circulation and shelving activities in the absence of senior personnel.
  • Supervises, trains, and directs library assistants and library aides.
  • Participates in shelving, retrieval, and delivery of materials to patrons.
  • Handles special searches, charging and discharging materials, processing reserves, and issuing library cards.
  • Maintains patron records and addresses customer service issues.
  • Develops and maintains understanding of the Library's integrated library system (ILS).
  • Ensures consistent application of procedures and policies.
  • Assists in evaluating lower-ranking staff and library aides.
  • Prepares statistical reports, revenue reports, and supply requisitions.
  • Maintains an orderly library atmosphere in departmental and public areas.
  • Provides input for the improvement of circulation and shelving activities.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
