About The Position

The Delaware Department of Justice is seeking an exceptional and highly skilled individual to join the Extradition Unit within the Administrative Division in the New Castle County office as a Special Investigator/State Detective. The Extraditions Unit is responsible for extraditing fugitives from anywhere in the United States and its territories. This position requires extensive travel in vehicles and commercial airlines. State Detectives assigned to Extraditions must be flexible with their schedule as transportation of fugitives can occur outside of normal office hours. The Special Investigator/State Detective is required to handle all aspects of their extraditions, including, but not limited to prisoner movement and security, anticipating, and resolving potential problems while moving a fugitive, and the logistical support of those operations. The Special Investigator/State Detective is expected to maintain professional contacts and communications with all law enforcement partners involved in the extradition process.

Requirements

  • Minimum five years law enforcement experience.
  • Ability to investigate complex and difficult cases both independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to prepare comprehensive investigative reports for review by a Deputy Attorney General for civil and criminal complaints.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Current or recent Police Officers Standards Training (“POST”) certification.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), DELJIS, NCIC, and LEISS.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to qualify to carry a DOJ-issued firearm.
  • Willingness to travel and attend various training opportunities as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts investigations, which includes conducting interviews to obtain confidential information, gathering evidence and documenting findings.
  • Interviews or interrogates witnesses, victims, suspects and others.
  • Verifies claims of alleged or probable violations.
  • Examines various records and documents in order to ascertain relevant information.
  • Identifies, gathers, collects, evaluates and preserves evidence.
  • Makes judgments after evaluating all available facts and recommends appropriate action.
  • Interprets and applies applicable laws, policies, and procedures.
  • Prepares comprehensive investigative reports.
  • Testifies in criminal or civil courts, before a Grand Jury, or during an administrative hearing.
  • May conduct surveillance and undercover investigations.
  • Prepares criminal or civil cases for prosecution.
