About The Position

The Special Events and Emergency Planner at North Carolina State University is responsible for consulting on and coordinating events within the university's jurisdiction, conducting risk assessments, and managing emergency response exercises. This role ensures the safety and security of events by developing comprehensive operations plans and staffing requirements, while also adhering to best practices in emergency management.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, emergency management, public or business administration, or a directly related field.
  • Three years of special event and/or emergency management experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Completion of ICS/NIMS courses ICS 100, ICS 200, ICS 300, ICS 400, IS 700, and IS 800 level training.
  • Ability to be certified by FEMA to teach ICS/NIMS courses 300 and 400.
  • Strong time management, project management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of national trends, solutions, and best practices in emergency management.
  • Ability to coordinate a variety of activities involved in the planning and execution of events.
  • Ability to investigate and resolve public problems and complaints.
  • Ability to operate a computer and appropriate software applications.
  • Ability to work long and irregular hours, including some weekends, evenings, holidays, and during states of emergency or disaster.
  • Exceptional organizational skills to analyze customer needs and anticipate service requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Current Certified Sports Security Professional (CSSP) certification.
  • Completion of the International Association of Venue Managers (IAVM) 'Academy for Venue Safety and Security (AVSS)'.
  • Additional coursework in emergency management and event management.

Responsibilities

  • Consult on events being planned within the jurisdiction of the University and coordinate with external partners on adjacent events.
  • Conduct risk assessments for events and provide recommendations/requirements for staffing and threat mitigation.
  • Staff events that police services are requested or required for, based on NFPA and FEMA best practices.
  • Develop and disseminate comprehensive operations plans for events in a timely manner.
  • Develop, coordinate, and execute large scale emergency response exercises and drills for the organization.
  • Manage the Incident Command (ICS) responsibilities for the organization, including ICS/NIMS training.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
